    Default Interesting old plane

The seller seems to think this is unique, and it's certainly not something you see every day. I'd post some pics, but I can't save them from that website on my iPad.

Tools - Antique wooden plane dated 1776, amazing piece! Great collector'''s item for sale in Johannesburg (ID:278061668)

I will agree that it has an interesting carving. I certainly not an expert for this type of plane just doesn't seem right about the date 1776?

Hopefully someone might be able to enlighten us if this was done or normal for that time frame in South Africa?

I'd be extremely surprised if it was made in 1776, my guess would be that it commemorates that year, quite possibly the American Declaration of Independence. I'm also pretty certain that it wasn't made here in South Africa too, and was imported.

To be honest, one of the reasons I posted the link is because I was hoping someone would recognise it and tell us more about it.

Its another 18th century plane . They are rare but do show up . It could be Dutch ? or German ? And looks like it could be a panel raising plane with the blade being skewed like that and running across to the rebate in the sole. The screw head in the top has me wondering what it is doing there . Google has plenty of pictures of carved planes like this but you probably wont see two the same .

Thanks Rob, for saving the pictures, identifying the plane and for the link to other similar planes. Looks like I was wrong about the year - it looks like it was actually the year it was made.

It being Dutch makes sense, as the old Cape colony was founded by the Dutch, and alternated between the Dutch and English a few times over the next couple of hundred years.

Thats OK , I love this sort of thing . I'd like to own one but wouldn't pay that much just to have an antique block of wood sit on a shelf . It would have to be cheap for me to buy it. To pick up an hold one for a few minutes would keep me happy . Then retuturn it to the owner.

This is the screw head I was wondering about . It looks like one . Or has it just been stamped into the wood ? It could have been added later for some reason . I don't think its a construction thing ? There would probably be three others ?
