    Hi Jason,

Top and bottom and both sides have first grind completed. side bevels and skews are next. I really like the look of the skews.

Apologies... I won't be able to get to the post office today, I've got a family situation to take care of.. My 94 year old Mother has just gone into care, and it's taking a bit of time to get things settled.

Getting back on track... I'll be packing up the replacement 12mm chisels this afternoon, Josh is going to touch them up on the water stones before I finally get them to the post office.

I did a bit of a comparison with the different batches and styles of paring chisels.. I got an unground set on ebay of the first batch, so that forms the basis for some of the comparison.

    DSCN0060.jpgDSCN0061.JPG

    From the top,

    1. 12mm short paring chisel first batch,
    2. 9mm paring chisel first batch
    3. 12mm paring chisel first batch ( only top and bottom grind )
    4. 12mm paring chisel second batch ( only top and bottom grind )
    5. 12mm paring chisel second batch, replacement for missing from first batch

The essential differences are thickness, first batch is 3.3mm second is 4.3mm thick, side bevel angles, 30 vs 45, first batch didn't taper along the length, overall lengths are different, shoulder tangs are different shapes.

Second picture is the chisels I'm packing up today. In that picture they haven't been touched up on the water stone, or had the protective film put on the edges.

    Ray

PS.. A special thanks to those who kindly lent me their chisels from the first batch, so I could figure out what needed doing. I'll be posting them back as soon as Josh finishes sharpening them...

That was 21 June in reply to an assertion that it would be a few months from April.

    What is the status now?

And Helmut, when are you going to Shepparton to sort this all out? You have assured me twice now that was going to happen.

    Yes, always a fair question.

Ray153, Just to be clear, Any delays are down to me, not Helmut. He's welcome in the workshop at anytime, but it won't make finishing the job any quicker.

There have been a few unavoidable distractions, in the last few weeks, but, no one will be happier than me to see the successful completion of the project.

While we are on the topic.... I have a query for those who received the firmer chisels, ( and earlier batches of paring chisels for that matter ) has anyone written up a detailed account of the recommended method of fitting the ferrules and drilling the handles for the tang. I assume everyone cuts the end of the tang to remove the wire hole? Do they?

That is not an answer to the question that was asked.

What has been done to the parer chisels order in the last 2 months?

Thanks Kev, lots of good tips in that thread, I always like reading Derek's write-up's as well, linked from that thread... http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ShopMad...ailchisel.html

Ray153, We ( Josh is back on the job as well ) are still working through the smaller sizes, currently squaring the sides and removing the jagged water jet edges so there is a reference surface for the bevel grinding.

Thanks for the PM's, I especially liked hearing how well the firmer chisels are performing, M2 is tough stuff..

    Hi Chris,

That's strange, all the plane blades were shipped ages ago.. I'll check my records, meantime maybe Helmut can check his records as well..

    Ray

EDIT... I have you down for a 40x4x50 plane blade. I will check when it was posted. If it's gone missing, I will organize a replacement.

EDIT2 ... In my order I got a couple of 40x6x100 blades, I could let you have one of those, or alternatively I could cut it in half to make 2x 50mm long and grind the thickness from 6mm to 4mm..

    Hi Chris,

Mystery solved... I need to talk with Helmut and check a couple of things, but I'm happy to let you have one of mine. Trezza is the only one who we couldn't get in touch with.

    Regards
    Ray
