    Default Plane id please

    Hello folks.
Have just started cleaning an old try plane. Big block of beech, remouthed, blade worn almost back to the notch, a bit of woodworm. It has seen better days. Pervious owner's name is stamped all over it (j.howard a previous pm?) but I am having difficulty identifying the maker. A bit of cleaning of the nose reveals, amongst the owners stamps and many past hammer blows,"Holborn....duct" at
least that's what it looks like.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Virgil.

A stab in the dark here, Holborn Viaduct is a place in London (UK), It's entirely likely that there was a maker in that area many years ago and you can see part of the Address. But I've no idea who it might have been I'm afraid.

I went to the link to the planemakers data base, Good link thanks Pac man. There is a list of adds by google on the right, the one on top is for the book British Planemakers from 1700, price $481 thought it may be a mistake ? clicked it and went to Amazon where it says 3 used ones available all around this price. I thought It must be a mistake at first ? Maybe not.

British Planemakers from 1700 is currently at 3rd edition ... I'm pretty sure it is about 100 Pounds.

It is significantly updated from ed 2 ... which is probably about 40 Pounds on Uk ebay.

Maybe the $$$ is for first editions?? No your link says 3rd ... hmmm

There is a 4th edition in the works, but I don't know the time-frame.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Well done gents.

Holborn ...duct and underneath London. I think we've nailed it. No absolute confirmation that it's a Buck Bros as yet but that's a great start. Blade is a James Howarth. It's a quiet day in today I think there'll be a bit of plane restoration coming along sometime today.

    Cheers,
    Virg

You can get the book 1st edition for around $us40. It only gets expensive with the third which has been revised by the Rees couple. Try Abebooks.
