Plane protection
Hello everyone , I'm wondering what kind of protection you use on the sole of your plane. I used to use paste wax , but I found it left an ugly mess and didn't last long. Right now I'm using a very light motor oil W5-30 , do you think this is a good idea or should I try some thing else? Also I'm thinking of buying a jack or a fore plane , what current or pass model do you recomend ( I'm a student so I can only aford 80-150 dollars ) based on preformance and ease of use.
Thanks for your help ,
Kristian

I use Camellia oil as a general steel tool protectant and white candle wax on a plane's sole to help it along

Everyones got their favourite.
I like SilvaGlide, about $30 a can, lasts for years. Use it on machine table beds, chisels, planes, any metal surface,Bodgy

I agree with Bodgy...
I also use SilverGlide. Wonderful stuff... Works very well as a lubricant on machinery, planer tables, handtools etc.Greg Lee

Camiellia oil for the exposed metal parts. I have a felt pad charged with petroleum oil (unscented baby oil) that I run the plane's sole over every 5th stroke or so.
For your next plane, have a good look at the Lee Valley/Veritas Low Angle (Bevel Up) Jack. Here:

I know it's a bit out of your range at $189, but I have it out for every project now. Wonderfully versatile thing. If you have to skip a couple of parties/meals/movies, do it for this baby.
If not, look for a nice old Stanley #5, and put a Hock blade in it.The only way to get rid of a [Domino] temptation is to yield to it. Oscar Wilde

I use a wax/polish made by Gilly Stephenson in WA, I would use silverglide but I have been too lazy to go to Carbatec. It has carnuba wax in the base so it polishes up well, I got it from Bunnings in the paint section.
