    Default Planing

I think I'd like a hand plane instead of a jointer
I'm attracted to the benefits of a wood plane instead of a metal plane.
I should support the local maker but the german planes made by e. c. emmerich and sold by mik have me thinking. Probably because I haven't played with a gordon i'm attracted to the excellent blade adjustment on these planes. Also because planes appear to last a long time the difference in $ is probably acceptable. Does anyone have experience of ece planes?

I have not used the ece planes, but I own several of the HNT Gordon planes. Let me assure you that adjustment of the gordon plane is very simple and easy. I have have the jointer plane and it is a great tool. The 1/4" thick blade is great.

If you have not already looked, check out the HNT web site. I think that it is www.hntgordon.com.au

    Cheers,

    Chris

I agree wholeheartedly with Chris. Don't be seduced by the presence of an adjuster. There is a short learning curve for wooden planes, but really this is very quickly mastered. I have a very large number of planes, some with adjusters and some without. My favourite are those without.

Having said that, you will not be disappointed with either an ECE or HNT Gordon. I own a few of the latter and, in fact, am planing to get their jointer in the next few weeks. At its price I think it is a steal (compared to the opposition, that is. About one third of a LN and half that of the ECE). Should you elect to go for the ECE, however, you can reassure yourself that it has an enviable reputation as a very fine plane. Both the ECE and HNT Gordon are well suited for planing our tricky Australian hard woods.

What others are there to choose from? The opposition are all basically iron planes - LN, Clifton, Stanley, Record (all #7 or, if you have muscles to spare, the #8). I have an old Stanley #7 with a Clifton blade and chipbreaker. This works very well but is better suited (as are all these iron planes) for softer woods or those with straight grains.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek
