I had another, longer look at your pic. of the #3. The colour & grain is more consistent with Rosewood than Beech for the tote, but the front knob looks more like stained Beech. I also looked a bit more carefully at the adjuster yoke, & it's pressed-steel, which suggests the tote is a graft, not the original. It would've been a cast yolk in the Rosewood era.
I get a lot of exercise jumping to conclusions......

The sample dovetail is the rare item for the 444.
I've had 3 of them and only one had the dovetail.
Missed another up the coast from an old workmate, it sold in seperate lots at his estate auction I was told.
Bit like the 51 and 52s, odd looking plane and a funny cast iron thing screwed to a bench.
