That would be the medium sized black hole recently discovered, but clearly very active and specifically targeting saw restorers. I don't think it had been discovered before your post, but the disappearance of your request has subsequently confirmed it's existence to astronomers world wide.

Matt, I don't think you need to send the saw, I'm sure you can fit a couple of bolts without too much stress!
I will make the bolts a mm or so longer than the handle thickness, to be on the safe side. Once all is firmly in place, you just lop off the excess, file/sand it flush with the nut, & voila, a perfect fit. You will need to deepen the recesses for the nuts a little, I think - they look very shallow (<1mm?), and a nut needs to be at least 2mm thick to contain enough threads to hold securely. Also, I will put a small square shoulder under the bolt head, to stop it turning when you tighten/loosen the nuts. With the tough woods I like to use for handles, I have to chop out the recess with a matching chisel, but Beech isn't so hard, & I expect you'll be able to tap/press a small shoulder into the existing holes quite easily..

Actually, Paul, I think Telstra has known about it for some time. Our local exchange drops out quite frequently, and has become quite erratic during the current hot spell - annoying, but the price we pay for living out here in the 'bush' (17Ks from the GPO! ).

Ok lotto numbers are in 11.80mm for the bolt diameter. Not a bad guess Ian (I've averaged them out they were all different sizes not surprisingly.
Shaft was 3.2 spot on there .
Handle thickness 19.5 mm ,a little bit of on this one (1.5 mm lol)

Ian ,the bolt holes on the blade look like they were punched through with hell knows what .
So ,if I can be so bold and ask for the shaft to be around 3.6/3.8 mm I can round the holes out with a small round file.
You were also a little generous with your estimated on the bolt recess it's just over 1/2 mm deep [emoji849].

So considering you eyeballed all this in Queensland with my crapy pics taken on a phone camera in that cold hell of Ballarat ,I'm might impressed.

I'm also not sure why I suggested sending the saw up your way ,hope that was not seen has being lazy.
I think your right ,I can fit some saw bolts .
Worst case ,I just use a bigger hammer lol.

Applied a coat of boil lined seed oil today ,
on the handle I reframed from going over the top on it.
    But ,it looks ok
Not has good as yours or my handles of course tho.[emoji41]

Ian ,also please if your snowed under with other stuff ,please say so ,there's no hurry at all on the bolts.
I'm sure I could get around to making some myself .
Not that I wouldn't be happy fitting yours tho.

    Cheers Matt .

OK Matt, easy peasy, it's not a big deal to churn out a couple of bolts & nuts. I happen to be doing some metal turning atm, so I'm sure I can find 10 minutes to make your bolts.

Now, I gather you'd like them a bit fatter than the original spindly things, which is not a bad idea, but 3.6 or 3.8mm!? While 3.8mm is getting very close to 9/64", 3.6 is a bit of an orphan size & taps & dies come in round figures, my lad, so if you don't want 1/8" (3.2mm), we'll have to go to the next 'regular' size. I don't have anything in 9/64, so the next size I can do is 4 mm. Since that's only .2mm bigger than the larger of your suggested sizes, will that be a good compromise? You will also be able to match a drill-bit to clean out the plate holes....

If 4mm suits, I'll whip them up tomorrow, and they can be on their way by early next week - got to go out sometime in the next couple of days 'cos my beer supply is running dangerously low, & I couldn't manage long with a dry fridge in this heat-wave! The post-office is on the way to the bottle-o...

Better PM me a postal address, too...

    Cheers,
    IW

    Well Matt

The screw holes in your handle are a bit dark, but the truth is that Ian broached the subject while wearing his Star Trek hat in post stargate 29.

    Ian,

    4 mm will be perfect
A little on the fat side will not hurt any one
And I very sorry to hear your beer supply is low.
But I thought you were a red man guy [emoji849].

    Cheers Matt

    Are we dipper dobbing.

Remembering Ian is the moderator here.
He may put you back to when you had to hand cut the teeth on the file to sharpen the saw. [emoji12][emoji12]

    Default Here y'go Matt..

OK, Matt, I knocked these out this morning, before the heat burned me out of my shed (it hit 42 here today! ) bolts.jpg

They are longer than the thickness of your handle by aprox a mm, so I hope they'll do the job for you: bolt length.jpg

They are rather odd little things, I kept the heads as thin as I thought would be practical (~2mm) but the nuts are about 2.5mm thick. I don't like making them much thinner, because even at that thickness, there are only about 3 1/2 full turns of thread. Anyways, you can choose to deepen the recesses a bit more, or sand the nuts off a bit - over to you....

I'll get them in the post tomorrow, I hope, so you should see them by the weekend...
    Cheers,
    IW

    Ian,
    Your a star.
They look fantastic. Can't wait to fit them now.
And give the little saw a sharpen up.
Will hopefully find some time next weekend maybe(tho it's someone's bday and I have to be on my best behaviour).
I hope it cools down for you soon up there.
I owe you heaps, thanks again if I find my way up there one day we will have to take you for dinner or something.

    Cheers Matt
