    Default Rare or mongrel?

I was rummaging through my collection of #4s on the weekend and at the bottom of the box was one that I had forgotten that I had acquired. It appears generally to be a Record with the SS cap iron.

What is unusual is that it has a red translucent front knob. Do you reckon this is because the original knob broke or was lost and an owner replaced it with a Turner red knob? Or did Record ever use the same sort of knob as Turner (I haven't ever seen one, but that means nothing)? So is it rare or just a mongrel?

    Cheers

    Hi Jeremy
I think my SS Record #4 has beech tote and knob. It was made during WW2. They are good planes I recon.
    Cheers from NZ

haven'tt used an older record but i reckon the 3 pope falcons bench planes i have are pretty nice planes and i reckon they are better in some ways than the stanleys of which i have 2.

i notice on ebay the stanleys are always going for higher prices and there are so many of them.

    wouldn't mind getting a #3 record actually
