OK, & we better stop hijacking this thread, which is about sharpening, not making!

PM me with details of what you want to make and we'll start working out what you each need on the day.

WRT handles, I advise sticking to fairly conventional patterns on your first saw or two (you can go wild later, when you know what you are doing). If you aren't sure what sort of handle you want, take a look at some examples on the Backsaw.net site gallery and on the Disstonian site or any others you can find. I can help you adapt any shape you like (within reason!) so it ends up the right size for your mit, and get the hang angle suited to what you intend using it for most...

    Cheers,
    IW

Hijack the thread! What started, by me, as an innocent little comment ends up in making a saw. Hijack to your hearts content. Some good things come most unexpectedly. I once started talking to this girl (I was very young) and many children latter I am still talking to her.

It it has been a desire of mine for some 20 years or more to try this saw making. There are some things I must do before I get much older. Saw making is one, carving is another. Sharpening my own saws was another one. I bought some carving chisels at the wood show and Saturday morning I will begin that trip too.

It amazes me that anybody, in good health, ever gets bored.

Good on ya Chook. I share the same philosophy. Saw making, traditional hand planes, furniture making. Never too old to learn new skills.

I got a few from Jim Davies at the Wood Show. They cost almost nothing from him.

It's a slippery slope indeed, Chook, talking of making saws soon after sharpening your first. It does that to you, though, so others be warned!

Let me know when you want to make your saw. I have just received my share of a roll of 4" x 25 thou sawplate, and there should be a couple of lengths more than I need at present, so I might be pursuaded to part with some.....

There was some talk of a saw-making workshop along the lines of the one in Melbourne last year, but haven't heard anything more about it lately. Is there any interest in something like that here in the Brisbane area?

    Cheers,
    Ian

This may be what you had mentioned to me or was that sharpening only. If there is still space or alternatively if anybody has to pull out can you consider me as a potential 12th man? Always assuming it falls conveniently in my roster of course.
