Default Record 073 and Howard Adjuster Mk II

I've been thinking about grabbing a Howard Adjuster Mk II to upgrade my Record 073. The current adjuster is looking pretty ratty and is a bit loose.

Does anyone here know if the thread is the same on the Record and Lie-Nielsen shoulder planes, and would the adjuster work on a standard (non-LN) blade?

The fellow at the counter at the Canberra Working With Wood show didn't know, and emails to Henry Eckert came back with the same response.

    Thanks,

    Craig

Craig, apart from the thread, the other questions to be answered are, will the bearing fit in the slot of the Record, and is there the right distance between the stud & blade for the rim of the bearing to engage the slot cleanly?? Unless someone has already investigated it & knows the answer, you might have to wait 'til the next wood show & take your plane along to their stand for a trial-fit...

It's one of those simple but brilliant ideas that make you wonder why nobody ever thought of it before! I reckon it should make quite a difference to smooth operation. When I made myself a shoulder plane many years back, I used a Record blade & went to a lot of trouble to include an adjuster like the Record's, but quickly found it not worth the trouble it took to make. I'd have saved myself a whole lot of bother then & since by simply leaving it out. I'd like to try one of these Howard adjuster knobs on it, but I used a very non-standard thread on the stud, so there's no chance. Now I have the gear, I might make myself something similar one day, but it's a 'set & forget' type of tool, so the only times I remember what a pain it is, is after each sharpening, which fortunately isn't as often as for a bench plane...

    Cheers,
    IW

Your Record is likely to have a BSW thread (certainly a 55 degree thread). A Lie-Nielsen plane would have an American thread (60 degree thread). However, most BSW and UNC threads share the same tpi count, so will fit (albeit a less than perfect fit from an engineering perspective).

I note that HE have "...a 'no questions asked' 30 day return policy for full refund." So it may be worth trying one.

    Cheers, Vann.
