    Default Record Vise Question.

Alernative title........I really must get a thread guage.

On the old #52 Record vises there are screw holes so that you can attach timber jaws.

Anybody know what thread these might be?

Answers to this question that contain words "self' and 'tapping' will be ignored.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it's worth the bother of cleaning up the threads with a tap and then getting the appropriate screws.....but it looks right.
I did notice that the new Record vises no longer have threads in these holes.
    What's the world coming too?

    Hi Seanz,

To use the thread you will need to disassemble the vise and mound the timber jaws from the inside ensuring you countersink the screws fully.

Most modern vises mount the screws from the outside which is why they no longer have threaded holes (and therefore cheaper to make).
This method works fine because the screws are just holding the wood in place as the forces involved in clamping the job ensure the jaws cannot escape no matter how small the screws you use are.

I would simply use a couple of wood screws that fit through the holes without having to remove the threads.

    Regards,
    Chris

Not strictly true. A stubby screwdriver will do the job without any taking apart.

Hmmm. To not use the thread....screw into rather than through the timber...I have to remove the vise from the bench to access the rear of the fixed metal jaw.

Edit....maybe I don't have to remove the vise, would a longer screw do the job?

Just thought one of the forum members might know the answer off of the top of their head.
I probably should get a proper thread gauge......

I've got a 52 1/2, which I've had since the 1970s and final got around to mounting this year . I acquired csk machine screws all those years ago - I think they're BSW thread (1/4" maybe?). I'll check tomorrow.

    seanz,
I have an old 52-1/2 record vice, with threaded holes and screws. Haven't measured the thread, so can't tell you.

At a guess its either 6mm or 1/4W.

    Thanks mate

The70's? That makes me feel much better about leaving a #52 on a bench without timber in the jaws for a month.

BSW? Sounds reasonable. I'll check around the good shops for a tap and some screws.

    Hi again Seanz,

The machine screws I have are 5/16" 18tpi, which I believe is BSW (without actually checking ).

Of course there's no guarantee that the threads on your #52 are the same size as on my #52 1/2...

    Success.

5/16" BSW it is. Bought a tap from one shop and a box of screws from the next. Screws are too short (by about 1/2") for the #52 1/2 but will be good for the #52.

Don't know why I kept going to the next 2ndhand shop when I'd found a good tap at the first one.....but I did get 2kg of 1 1/4" copper nails for $30....bonus!
