Default Replacement blades irons Stanley Bench Planes

    Hi,

I am looking for replacement iron and cap iron for my Stanley #8 and Falcon 4 1/2.

Have looked at IBC from Jim Davey ... anyone else done this ? What results did you have ?

I've bought 2x No 4 blades and a No 7 blade, also 2x 151 spokeshave blades. Very satisfied with the result. I didn't buy the cap irons because I didn't want to enlarge mouths on the planes. TT

I have an M2 HSS iron from one of the group buys here that's never been used and not likely to. I'll double check the size tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it's for a No. 8

Thumbsucker kindly organised the making of a couple of batches of "Stanley" type replacement plane irons, in M2 steel (like A2 on steroids), a few years ago. Also chisels. Unfortunately he took his eye off the ball and the second batch took over two years to complete (and there's a thread still running on the last of the chisels - now over four years down the track).

    Cheers, Vann.

I'm not sure how that works. How do you adjust the blade with a cap iron? And isn't it the thickness of the blade and not the cap iron that prevents you from using it with the standard mouth?

I've got an IBC blade with cap iron for a No 7 but have never used it because I'm not that keen on filing out the mouth on a No 7. The Veritas blade for my No 4 fits well enough with a standard mouth and if buying again, I'd probably get another Veritas.

I'm with Colin. You can use your existing cap-iron with a new thicker iron, if your cap-screw is long enough, and if the yoke will reach through the thicker iron (through all of it's movement - not just at the mid-point), but you may still have to file the plane mouth to get the new iron to pass through.

Better to do it the other way around. Fit a thicker cap-iron to deaden vibration in your existing cutting iron. No hassles with the yoke; no hassles with the cap-screw; no hassles with the mouth - simples. And cheaper.

Finally remember to measure my iron, it'll fit a No.8
The corners are slightly chipped about 1mm; don't know if you like 'em rounded or not, cos that'll fix it. Other than that it's sharp and polished (not the whole back, but all across the edge is nice and shiny).
    $30 if you want it
Was going to post a pic, but the site's on strike for the moment.

Thanks anyway! but I am going to give one of Jim Davey's IBC blades with a second hand back iron and long screw a try.

Am also ordering a 2 3/8 IBC double iron for a Falcon 4 1/2 I purchased a while ago that also has a badly pitted blade.

Will post and update when I receive them and try them out.

Received my new blades Monday. Only ordered them Friday afternoon, so huge kudos to Jim Davey ! Sensational service.

The IBC with the second hand back iron and longer screw slotted right into the #8 right out of the box. Jim also gave the back iron a touch up and cleaned up the nose. It's a thicker blade than original Stanley kit, but slotted right in. Much nicer finish than the old pitted blade.

The IBC/Cosman double iron is a different beast all together, and thicker again. I had to file the mouth open by maybe 2mm to cater for the thicker iron. It took me a little while to build confidence as I have never taken to a pmane with a file.

While both blades are marketed as being "razor sharp", I would hardly suggest this is the case. Sharp yes ... Brutally sharp no. However, a quick touch up on my granite mounted wet and dry, followed by honing compound and they came up a treat.

It took me a little while to get the frog set correctly, and to get the mouth wide enough.

But now, we have a very functional smoother, with a super meaty blade. If anyone is looking to do this, I would say either option is a good one (ie single iron and long screw to mate your existing cap iron, or new double iron). Of course. I would also recommend Jim Davey for his outstanding service and assistance.

I don't know about the no 8 but I replaced the blade and chip breaker on my Stanley no 7 with a PMV 11 blade from Veritas. It turned a good plane into a bit of magic. PMV 11 steel is easy to sharpen and holds an edge even at low angles. The chip breaker and the blade are a bit thicker than the standard Stanley. Dead flat and mate perfectly.
