So the handle has a little extra ... The maker is CE Jennings & Co, New York.

and there is a pocket-knife-ish sort of addition to the handle.

Wow. Thanks Peter. 24th Nov ... timing or what??

    I know it's a set, but ... $206 ?!?!

Mine was 2 saws for $25 Antique Jennings Co NY No 9 Crosscut Hand Saw Vulcan Hand Crosscut Saw | eBay

and yes ... as you said ...

    20131203_153240[1].jpg

I had actually been looking at the picture of the handle last night and thinking about the forces involved in sawing and how the two bolts were in a sorta weak place for pushing and pulling on the blade. But replaceable blades didn't occur to me.

    Thanks!

    Paul.

Nice stuff. It's about time we had an overview of the full collection!

Also received a copy of 'The Precision Handcutting of Dovetails' .. Cecil E Pierce 1995.

Is this book known around? He uses a hacksaw with top-half the blade cut away to cut to 1/16" from the line and pare ...

Many delightfully non-mainstream ideas ... compared to today.

    Peter nailed it. (As usual.)

    GAM and GGs,
The handle Erv is referring to is listed as the Garland Adjustable
    Handle in the c. 1913 C. E. Jennings & Co Price List No. 13
reprint that MWTCA did in 1985.

The text for the handle reads, "The feature of the handle is the
adjustable lever that operates the screw which holds the blade.
The blade may be instantly removed from the handle without use
of a screw driver and another blade inserted. A screw driver
may be used if it is desirable to tighten the screws to render the
    blade rigid."

Provided with a number of combination sets of saws containing
    from two to six blades.

The text on one page indicates that a patent was applied for but
in looking for it rather extensively under the usual patent categories,
I haven't been able to locate a patented issued under that name
or with that particular feature. If I had a patent date.....

    Best, Brian

    Paul

Having seen your "Report No.5" I concluded there must be at least four more floating around .

    Nice work.
