Saw Report 5
There's one important thing to get out of the way, straight up.
I can cope with this ... using a less than inspiring Disston ...

... or circular saw blades unlikely to face re-use ...
Painting more sparingly isn't soooo bad, I guess .... http://woodwardstore.mycafecommerce....d-saw---bowery
Or better still ... just use the reverse ...
Frankly, this is insulting ... ... but by chance it is on the reverse.
But this was the FINAL STRAW.

You think you can spill your crayons all over a #12 ??? ( ... even if it isn't a Disston ... )
Get thee behind me, Satan.
Oh no you don't ! I've bought it and that crap is coming off !!!

At the risk of causing a scene . How about this?
Simonds scene.JPG
Relax, relax, I rescued it .
Here it is sitting safely at home
somonds saws 005.jpg
It falls in the same category as Paul's No.12. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot were they thinking?
On the plus side it was such terrible picture it made the saw very cheap.
I tried a little scratching of the picture to verify what I thought it was. I was pleased to see not only was it the model I thought, but it had a complete etch (all three in this model) and is in pretty good nick all round including the handle.
Why would they have done such a thing when there are so many jagged pieces of toothed metal with a handle on them floating around?
More to follow on this one as it has a home to go to and I have already stripped the plate and handle back.

I would be very glad to know they didn't ROS the blade smooth ... in order not to detrimentally affect the quality of the painting ...

Paul
On the subject of your WS No.12: It may be a No.12. The medallions and saw nuts are wrong. I don't think they used nickel plated saw nuts in the era that plates featured a nib.
BTW, what is the black stuff they use? You can see it on the back of your saw and I have seen it on saws before. Is it a primer or a rust converter/preventative?
Your saw looks good and virtually full width with a very well preserved handle. When you get it (I'm assuming it might be a while from the US) it will be interesting to see what lies beneath. I sometimes think that is more rewarding than knowing beforehand. There again, it can be an expensive exercise too.

Ok, this is how my scene came up or rather came off!
A couple of Simonds 011.jpgA couple of Simonds 017.jpg
Not too bad. I have started another thread to save hi-jacking Paul's excellent theme.

I didn't take particular note of the back - hard to say from the angle. It could be a smooth, stable black rust ... I'll let you know in 4-6 months.
I've been off the ebay bandwagon for maybe 6 months now ... having picked up a few saws already <cough> and felt I should address storage before allowing any more hunting.
Buuuttt ... there was enough waiting there to get organised into two moderately sized boxes <cough> ... one of which arrived here some weeks ago ... and the other needing to depart pretty much now.
I'll post a bit about some of the new arrivals ...

Ooooh. A sight for saw eyes .
It's a bit difficult to see what you've got other than a lot. Looks like an EC Atkins compass saw from Mike and also a big hand saw from Joe.
Am I right?
