Ok, ok. I feel suitably chastened. Yes I've lost skin when the file has drifted off of the centre line but, well.... nothing a drop of super glue can't stem. It's never been much of an issue with back saws but must admit that whilst recently sharpening my hand saw, the larger teeth were a little more intimidating to be running my knuckles alongside.

Perhaps I should just bow to your collective wisdom and make a file holding jig.

Your choice my lad, but I can find enough ways to traumatise myself without running my fingers along saw teeth. In the last two days I've managed to slice the top of my left index finger with a freshly-sharpened chisel and nick my little finger on the corner of another (not freshly-sharpened but still had a very keen edge, I found...). Both cuts bled profusely and I ended up with blood spots on the job. Damn, but it's hard to get that stuff off freshly-planed wood!

A split second before the chisel slipped & sliced my index finger the small part of my brain where the remnants of intelligence reside flagged I was doing something stupid, but the message to stop arrived in my right arm too late....

    Cheers,
    IW
