    Default Router Plane Repair Problem

I have a Stanley 171 router plane that needs a bit of TLC. The vertical adjustment threaded rod has been damaged and it is some sort of orphan thread that Stanley dreamed up,more like an engineer had nightmare and decided to inflict his nightmare on the wood workers of the world. It is 1/4'' x 24TPI, has anyone had to repair one and if so where did you get the die? I could replace it and make a new nut, any suggestions welcome.

John Bates from the traditional tools group wrote the below on Stanley threads.

I have one you can have if you wish to chance getting it out of the body of a 71.

I don't think it is a straight thread Paul. Turned part with a threaded section.
Looks like the depth stop clamps onto the thread. Crappy design.

The dies can be had quite cheaply but it is probably a one time use thing.

OOOOPPPPPSSSSS! It is a 151 router plane not a 171. I was typing on a tablet and fat fingers etc. Thanks for the Ebay link Tony, I will grab one. Interesting reading those PDF's, I tend to agree with Jim Davey regarding the selection of thread pitch. The reference to 9/32" x 24TPI and this thread is 1/4" x 24TPI is sort of like Brass thread, the TPI never varies for any size.

G'day Chris as soon as I saw the thread title I thought give Jim a call as he has a few bits and pieces.

    cheers.......Roy
