Semi-modern Saw handles - Paul Sellers
Hey IanW, I finally got your issue of AWR last week.
Excellent article, very well done.
Fell over this today by accident ...

Thanks Paul - the postie takes a while to cross the Nullabor. (I suppose it would on one of those funny little motorbikes! )
Good stuff - I'm very much in favour of 'fixing' crappy handles, as you know - I've adjusted a few, but probably wouldn't have tackled one as crude as the one in the video. I would probably have started from scratch (or not started at all..) He made a remarkable difference, it still looks a bit 'abbreviated' compared with the oldie, but would certainly be a heck of a lot better to use for any extended sawing session.
What on earth are S&J thinking, to make such disgusting excuses for handles, with all the experience & tradition they have behind them? It's ok, I probably know the answer, & it has to do with the wankers in the marketing & accounts division, who have never held a saw of any kind in their lily-white hands....
Cheers,IW

The creepy thunder / breaking glass graphic was unintentionally hilarious.

I started off a bit negative towards beech (vs eg applewood and rosewood) ... in some of the well worn saw handles the wood can look quite weak.
This is the handle of the S&J 888 that I was messing with for quite a while. The beech looks exactly alike, although the shape is very different, so I would have good hopes for his handle. This handle was far from perfect to start with, but I could not believe how silky and tactile it became with not a great deal of sanding. It is now a bit muckier than it was from me putting my claws all over it. It is definitely blockier than the nice old ones ... but still good to hold.

By comparison here is one a little older (I think) where some of the wood has degraded.

I'd like to know why he didn't just take the handle off the blade to apply the shellac.
Argh! It is so incongruous with hand woodworking!
All I can come up with is ... marketing to Americans ... need flashy lights and stuff ... ???
Cheers,
Paul

Semi-modern Saw handles - Paul Sellers
Such ominous music and I love the slow mo shattering glass to finish
Here's a lightly tweaked handle I did the other day. I don't have a before shot but it was pretty basic.
I don't mind a pale handle, it's the toffee apple polyurethane finish the makes my teeth itch.

I didn't see that one before ... I'm quite liking it.
Have you added any wheat-carving to any of them?
or a bit of lining?
Fancy nuts, anyone??
