A New Shaker Stool
I built this Shaker stool for my mum it's based on the FWW mag issue no.231 by Christian Becksvoort.
I made it out of poplar I like working with poplar but for some reason it's expensive.
I used shellac dewaxed as my sealer and then coated it with a foam brush with some oil based stain big mistake using that brush as you can lots of burnt looking spots I later found during some usual experimenting of mine that a rag is the best. Nice even beautiful coats I'll post some sample pics of it later on. Anyway the finale was finished with two coats of Minwax antique oil and then some paste wax.
Hope you like it.
My current project is a moxon vice.

I like it a lot. That angled brace joint is a new one on me. It really gives it that simple yet clever look.

Build time was a day then glued up overnight, two days for the oil then 24 hours for the cure atleast that's what the can said but I reckon atleast 3 days to be fully cured so I let it go for that long before waxing it.
The angle brace was the hardest for me because somehow the numbers I written on them dissapeared a mystery that will never be solved because each brace could only fit the cut that was intended for so I had to recut them all to suit. This was a good project to practice tight fitting joints. Besides that the angle brace provides enormous strength also I made a shallow dadoe underneath to stop the legs from racking.
The shakers really new their stuff their furniture is simple looking yet beautiful and their joinery is strong and elegant. Truly this reflects their lifestyle, their beliefs I can understand why the yanks have fallen in love with their work.
