    Dave

There are a whole swag of Tyzacks.

Your one is Joseph Tyzack who was one of the younger sons of the second William Tyzack. Apart from the name there is no connection with the business and Joseph had the exclusive logo borrowed from some dealings with The Isle of Man Steamship Co. I think they made saws from 1879 through to 1924. We need you to clean the saw plate to see if there is an etch or stamp to narrow down the time frame: Even a partial, without trying to sound too much like CSI, would assist.

    Regards

    Grinder .

About 120g W & D I would suggest. Go carefully and slowly over the anticipated etch area. You know the drill (don't use a drill ). In particular look for the three legged Isle of Man symbol.

With Matt and I, our initial search showed nothing. But alas I shall have to administer some elbow grease.

You thing these saws had an etch? I wad wondering if they were not big time enkugh to have an etch.

Everything had an etch or a stamp . I am waiting for a book on British handsaws to arrive, but in the meantime I have Simon Barley's main work (as has Matt for that matter). There are quite a number of Joseph Tyzack trademark etchings and it may be possible to roughly date the saw from that. Models numbers at the moment are much more of a problem.

Etches can be a bit like the male "six pack:" Everybody has them, but with most of us they are not visible to the naked eye.
