    Default Sorby Saw

Had this one stashed away;picked it up a while back;thinking it was a Pruning Saw.
A very similar shape in the Disston catalogue is described as a Joiners saw.
    This one has a nib;is 16in long and has a 0.060" plate.
Plate is stamped "Robert Sorby Sheffield Cast Steel"and has three Crowns stamped above.
    Medallion is Corporate Mark Kangaroo.
Handle is a lovely piece of work in beech;the top surface is bevelled.
The blade stamping is quite rough compared to the Fitzwilliam I posted earlier.
This makes me think the Fitzwilliam is younger than it appears .
    Pics included
    Cheers

I have an identical saw, and they are usually called a table saw in UK catalogues. You will find this blade in a nest of saws as well. Salaman - Dictionary of Woodworking Tools - is not sure of purpose, perhaps to cut the rounds of large tables. Apparently they are sometimes found with teeth cut for a backwards stroke and may have been used to true up large scarf joints. I sharpened up mine to cut a large round, bit slow so got out the jigsaw to finish as I was in a hurry!

    Cheers
    Peter
