Some Spiers infill planes
These two planes popped up for sale on a local website, can any of the more knowledgeable individuals give a little more info on these? I already have a Norris and Preston and wouldn't mind adding these two to my collection. What would a fair price for them be? These types of planes hardly ever come up for sale over here but I also don't want to overpay..
Thanks gents

No clue about aus, but in the US, the ones without the rough repair to the wood would bring $200-$300 if they had the dirt brushed off of them.
Knock a little bit off on the other.
Infill planes have taken a nose dive in price over the last 4 or 5 years here.

John, your question is a bit like 'how long is a piece of string?' They are 'worth' whatever someone sees fit to pay. I'm strictly a user, & definitely not a collector, so they would have only practical value in my eyes. My evaluation would be pragmatic - I'd go through the exercise of considering a) how desperately I needed a couple of infill planes in those sizes, and b) how much my enthusiasm is tempered by the work to be done to bring them up to speed. It's always hard to tell from a picture, they may not be in as rough shape as they look (or they may be worse!), but if they are as neglected as they appear to be, there's a bit of work to be done there. If the business ends of the cutters have suffered as much as the bodies, you are going to be working on each of those alone for days. That's if they are resurrectable at all! Of course, the challenge of restoring a couple of old beauties to their former glory could be the main attraction?
Not very helpful, I know......
Cheers,IW

Thats a nice pair of later model planes for Spiers , not so late that they started getting ugly though. They look between ci 1880 to 90. And they are both in good looking condition , with what looks to be the original tapered blades and wood that looks to be in good condition , except for the front damage which could be repaired and made to be not so noticeable.
I think you would be doing well paying up to $200 for the smoother and $320 for the panel plane,
$350 for the smoother and $450 for the panel would be a price that I would expect to see them for sitting on a table at a tool sale, roughly ?
They have sold for higher prices than that in the past. But I do hear that , like was said above , prices have dropped.
I use Spiers planes , when I feel like treating my self to a pleasant hour or two of dressing up fine wood that deserves it.
Watching how well they work and the feel of well made rosewood handles is just Bliss
The rest of the time I reach for My Stanley's.

Thanks for the advice guys, duly noted! They are actually on auction with starting bids of $150 for the smoother and $200 for the panel plane, there aren't any bids on them yet but there are sure to be some as the end date draws nearer. Lets see what happens..

I see the smoother went with only the one bid and the panel plane has been relisted after it attracted no bids.
