Default Standard or Low Angle Block Plane?

I am looking at buying a standard or low angle block plane. Is there an advantage of one over the other?

    Thanks,

    Craig

If you are going to use it for slicing end-grain, a low-angle block plane is better. If you are using it for smoothing the faces of boards (like a small smoothing plane) a standard angle will generate less tearout, so it is easier to use on grainier woods like Aussie hardwoods. So buy both (or borrow a mate's pair and test them out).

Derek Cohen has an article on this question on his website:A Compendium of Block Planes
