Hmm, the old saying "if it seems too good to be true etc......" usually applies. Good spotting, gms.
The wood certainly isn't the 'ebony' of the small Mujis you pointed at, however, the blade is probably ok & it probably works, so it would still be a very inexpensive small plane. I was tempted to order one just to see....

FYI. Hock sells replacement blades for his kit planes. They come in 1" and 1.5".
Kits for Planes, Spokeshaves and Shoulder Planes
There is a link for the 1" @ $16 and I'm sure you could email him about the 1.5"

Thanks, Gavin - I did see those & there are similar small blades available elsewhere, but I don't need a cap-iron, and they are all thicker than I wanted. As it happens, I've changed my mind since I started the thread, & if I'd only done that at the beginning, I could have used a thicker blade. The project is beginning to take shape, but shed-time is limited due to the silliness that takes over normally sensible households at this time of year, so it is happening slowly. I'll show it off when it eventually gets done (as long as it urns out ok! )
Cheers,IW
