Default Stanley 130 - Hairline crack

Bought a Stanley 130 this week and while getting the sole flat I noticed there is a hairline crack out the side of the mouth. Is this going to be a problem? I don't want to waste my time setting it up if it's going to die after a short period of use. Bit of a pain because it's my only block plane but I only paid $20 for it so I could keep it for parts and start looking again if I had to.

If it's only going to be used for light trimming then don't worry about it. Maybe you could do a braze repair if you have the gear and it really bothered you?

To be frank a 130 isn't much of an improvement on any of the cheap Stanley block planes; having the bullnose end is its only saving grace. Use it until a decent 9-1/2, 15/16/17/18/19 or 60-1/2 comes along; or look at purchasing a brand new Luban/Wood River block plane for not much more.

Ouch. Always disappointing to find a crack under the patina.
Its broken but could potentially be useable for years.
Does it move? You could get it welded but it would be cheaper to buy another plane by the time you cleaned it up. Alternatively try some CA glue and use it until it stops working. Might be tomorrow. Might be forever.

Doesn't seem to have any flex in it from what I can tell. Might just keep it around for cornering duties and continue looking, got a Stanley 78 and a Record 077 for bullnose work so not that useful to me there.

Back on the hunt I suppose! A block plane has proven to be very elusive in Perth, I've gotten just about every other plane I wanted locally but I never seem to come across them unfortunately. Not really a fan of buying planes online, too many times I've done it in the past and found problems on arrival not shown in photos. Probably the motivation I need to get down to the Tool Preservation Society meeting sometime soon!

Cheers Fergiz01, much appreciated! If you ever need an extra pair of hands or help picking up something with a ute then you know who to ask.
