Stanley 386 jointer fence
Hi all plane junkies,
I've seen a few Stanley 386 jointer fences around, and was wondering if these were useful, or if they were a bit of a gimmick.
To my untrained eye, the fence looks too shallow to provide sufficient guidance to the plane - I find the deeper the fence, the easier it is to press against the side of a board and therefore the truer the results.
But then again, Veritas make a fence that also looks pretty shallow, and they normally get things pretty right

anyone have any views?

Interesting
Was just flicking through "Woodworker's Essential Shop Aids & Jigs" by Robert Wearing, published 1992. (borrowed from local library) Towards the end of the book there is a description of a home made attachment. Unfortunately it suggests you drill holes in your plane, I'm sure you could attach with small clamps
Whether or not these work or are a good idea, I have no idea

Very handy for squaring, jointing or bevelling and edge.
Here it is on a #5 1/2. Now it lives on a #7.
Regards from Perth

I know this is an old thread, but the title is right.
Does anyone know where I can buy a Stanley #386 Jointer Fence (or similar)?
Tried eBay and Google with no luck.
Edit: I see that Carbatec has a Veritas jointer fence, but it's restricted to 90 degrees unless a wood block/wedge is attached. I'd prefer an adjustable one if possible.
Not too sure about rare earth magnet attachment, either. Surely this would allow the fence to lean away at an angle from the plane? I think a clamp-on type would be best.
Any feedback appreciated.

Fantastic. Thanks, Ian. I just sent Patrick an email asking to have the list emailed to me.
By coincidence, I was on his site this morning, reading up on vintage plane identification. Didn't know the list existed though.
Thanks again. Fingers crossed I'll find what I'm looking for.

This gets easier by the minute. That's pretty much what I'm after. $70 + 0$ postage. I'd never heard of Hans Brunner until now. The learning continues.
I'm sick of jointing an edge until it's flat, only to find that I'm slightly off-square. I'll wait until I get Patrick's list, then make a choice.
Patrick Leach and Hans Brunner s#%t on eBay and Google in this department.
Thanks SG.

Derek, just wanted to thank you for your pic of the jointer fence. You've got me on the hunt for one. Just what I need to partly compensate for my skill level.
(Posted this 5 minutes ago, then thought I'd put it in the wrong thread, deleted it, immediately realised my mistake and re-posted. Sorry for the confusion, guys.)

You might wanna jump on the Hans one.
Patrick Leach's last list had one for US$115 (+ freight).
Cheers,
Paul

I remember having training wheels when I first learnt to ride but with practice I didn't need them anymore.
Enough said,
Cheers
