New Stanley no. 4
So i receive a new no. 4 plane for xmas yesterday. I spent a bit of time get to know the parts and watched a couple of vids on YouTube about setting them up. Then I sharpened the bevel to scary sharp.
This morning I grabbed some scrap timber and had a play to get it shaving nicely.IMG_20171218_082629.jpg
It was a thing of beauty. That amazing sound and the nice ribbons had me grinning ear to ear. So I thought I could get to work on some projects I'm trying to finish and boom that shorty plastic handle breaks in 2.
Anyway after I went and bought another and will return the broken asap. I noticed instantly the the handle on the new was a better fit.
So back to work on the projects. Here's a pic of some drool-worthy redgum

Moral of the story: next time I will save for a veritas.
Cheers.

It's fantastic you got your new Stanley working.
The sound of a plane cutting beautiful curls can't be beat.
Shame about the handle breaking but I'm not surprised there's a fair bit of force that there put under. And I'm not sure the plastic ones are up to the task.
I personally would want timber handle one.
And just wait till you step up to a veritas or an older style Stanley or any of the other premium planes that has been tweaked to getting it running perfectly.
You will then really be in heaven.
Well done.
Cheers Matt

I briefly considered offering you a pair of wood handles, but the rear tote handles are becoming a little bit hard to find.
Welcome to the obsession.

You don't need to spend a fortune on a Veritas, an old Stanley (made in USA or one of the first UK ones) will make a perfectly good user plane.

My first thought was that I would replace the handles with wooden ones. I will try to make them at some stage, should be a good little project.

Getting a new Stanley to make shavings like those is a pretty good effort for a beginner. Looks like you got lucky and received the plane the QC bloke actually checked before it went in the box.
Now you've got it, it's worth keeping & persevering with. Pretty sure I've got some woodwork that will fit your plane if they haven't changed the stud lengths in the last 20 years. I'll have a look later & see what's there....
Cheers,IW
