I've been on-and-off hunting for No. 7 for a awhile now and I can't say sub-$100 on eBay occur often. Even Records, Falcons and Carters are all averaging $120+ these days.

I finally snapped up a Stanley No. 7 a few days ago for $100 local pickup. It has a handle - aka tote - repair (nothing too serious to redo properly) and a decent lever-cap repair.
Actually it's a big repair but cosmetically and functionally well done. If it wasn't a Type 11 (I love a nice low knob! ) I would've passed on it but it's an easy replacement if I choose to one day collect rather than use.
Plus besides dirt and grime it was pretty rust-free aside from the cacky cap-iron.

It also came with a Canadian Sweetheart iron which is a bummer too but again not a deal breaker for me. It's an easy replacement for a collector.

    Now to find an 8, 5 1/4, 2 and 1...

I'm currently negotiating on a deceased estate collection and might be able to offer you an 8 in about two weeks from now. If you want, I will PM you if it comes to fruition.

If Dubrosa passes on the 8 I'd likely be interested

Noted. I must add that I have not seen the thing in the flesh, so to speak, as yet.

The Type 11 cleaned up and working nicely. I really only remove dirt, grime and rust. And flatten the sole.
Still have to properly repair the damaged handle. The Sweetheart iron is cutting nicely.

Looks like a proper working tool.

But what on earth happened to the back of the heel? Looks like someone has laid into it with a hammer - didn't they notice it has an adjuster?!

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
The heel of the body? A little dinged and some japanning has flaked so there's rust pitting. Otherwise it's fine IMO.
My No. 5 1/2 is worse

I guess it just looked worse in the pic than it really is, dubrosa. I thought I saw several deep dings that looked like someone had hammered it, for some reason. I can't think why anyone would, but who knows? I have a Record 010 1/2 that someone used as a hammer, judging by the deep dings in the middle of one side, so there's no telling what folks will do.

Anyway all's well, it seems, and I'm actually a bit envious - I too like the oldies with the low knobs and the nicely-shaped totes. So much so that I've made new knobs & totes in that style for all of my newer planes. I lower the knobs as much as possible by cutting off some of the thread on the stud, but if any future owner objects to my bit of vandalism, they are welcome to restore them - I've got the original knobs in a box, somewhere.....

    Cheers,
    IW

Handle repair with 2 part epoxy and African Blackwood dust. Wet with BLO:

BLO dry and back on the body:

I try to repair but maintain patina and finish. Old dirt and paint flecks don't bother me. Function is what counts. And history.

Sorry guys, I missed out on the No 8.

A fella paid over 300 for it, with a twice broken tote and cutter worn down to a stump.
