As people have mentioned far eastern made planes and high quality planes in this topic, is it possible, practical etc etc to buy a cheep plane, witht he intention of grinding the working out (as Derek has done with his plane) and bodging it up into a low angle bevel up plane?
Has anyone tried this?

Matt,
I have done similar mods to UK made No 4 & 5; to increase the cutting angle to 55 with shimes under frog, back bevel etc - for instructions, refer Derek's postings a while ago.
Low angle bevel up plane - I have not come across any low priced ones, only seen small block planes.
We need somebody to make some low priced low angle smoothers first.....
