Toolin, we are down to the last three sets of chisels. What sizes are you after?

Amazing that you should ask that Toolin Around, I was just about to ask if it was possible to get only 3 of the sizes. My budget doesn't stretch to buying the full set, and I'd only really use 3 sizes anyway, a big, medium and small size.

Maybe JDF and Toolin can split a set!

    Sounds like an idea!

What are the "in between" sizes that you're talking about Toolin?

Default Fancy Ferrules and Stage 4 for me

    Hi Helmut,

Please put me down for the fancy ferrules, and I will take my chisels all the way.

Very happy to round up the prices.

You are doing a great job

    Regards

    Brendan

If you have a looksy at the links in the pricing thread you'll see a few examples. I recommend the Blue Spruce style

    Hi TS,

I like to pull out of the chisel order...

but stay in the plane blade order as listed with cap and screws

    Sorry for the inconvenience

3% + rounding up is fine for me

Thanks for all the great work.

The sizes I was thinking of as in between were 4.5mm, 9mm and 15mm.

Hey Toolin'! Those are odd sizes aren't they?

I suppose that with the level of compexity this project is at, that asking for individual or custom sets is a bit too much isn't it? 'Cause I'm after 6, 12 and 25mm.

While I would prefer to allocate whole sets, I am however willing to allow members to pick up individual chisels, if it means that we fill the sheet. As we still have 8 whole sets left, at this time, as a few members dropped out of the chisel order.

I am after two 6 mm, two 9 mm and two 12 mm chisels on top of my whole set to be used as skew chisels.

JDF is after a 6 mm, 12 mm and 25 mm.

Toolin Around is after a 3 mm, 6 mm, 12 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm

    Default Chisel Order

    Sorry folks.

I too am unable to find the considerable warewithall to obtain the chisel set as the are now double the percieved price.

I know how good they will turnout but finances are tight.

I am still in for the plane blades complete with cap irons and screws

    Thanks

News, from all the companies I sent out a request for milling and grinding the only company outside of Rippon willing and able to do the milling and grinding for us was Alcol Precision Engineering Factory 25 Industry Pl, Bayswater, VIC.

I spoke to Ivan at Alcol and he has quoted me the following.

To mill all three bevel and to grind the top and bottom faces flat on the chisels he wants $20 per chisels, this is $5 cheaper then Rippon.

To grind Stanley Plane Blades top and bottom faces and to grind the primary bevel he wants $15 which is again $5 cheaper then Rippon. If we grind out own primary bevel on the Stanley Plane Blade, then Alcol only wants $10 per plane blade for the milling and grinding the top and bottom faces of the plane blades.

If we were to go with Alcol, the Stanley Plane Blade would be $27 (Grind your own primary bevel) to $33 (with primary bevel) instead of $38 per plane blade, and a Stage 02 chisels would be $29 instead of $34, a Stage 03 chisels would be $37 instead of $42, and a stage 04 chisels would be $40.50, instead of $45.50.

This tell us that Rippons prices are fair and in the ball park. However since we pay Rippon cash we get a 10% discount from them, I need to establish if Alco will do the same for us. If Alco does not take cash then the difference between Alco and Rippon is less then a two or three dollars. At least we now know that Rippon is not trying to rip us.

I will do some asking around about Alco to see what kind of reputation they have. If I only hear good things, and if members are happy to. I propose that we allow Alco to do our prototype run. This way we can see what Alco's work is like and we can test our production process. I however would prefer to stick with Rippon if we can get them to budge on the price.

I got a formal quote back from Frank at Harco Engenering. Who are able to make our fancy ferrules. Frank is asking $4.85 per ferrules plus GST. Attached is the quote Frank sent me.

I am chasing up Nicole Sinclair from parish engineering to see what their price for the fancy ferrules are.

*EDIT* I spoke to Nicole, and she had a few questions for me. She pointed out that you can only get 3 mm or 4 mm cutters to cut the bottom slot for the ferrule. So I opted for a 3 mm cutter which will give a tight fit for our 3.5 mm chisel.

So EITHER members can file between 0.2 and 0.4 mm from the slot to get a fit. OR simple use a belt sander to tapper the ferrules between 0.2 and 0.4 mm so that you can slide the ferrule down the tang and allow it to wedge tight. Knowing that that the hardened steel will peen the brass ferrules as the two are driven together.

I don't see any need to pay someone to grind the bevel on the plane blades, so if that's optional, I'll take mine square.
