    Default Stanley No2 Value?

Hi All visiting at a friends place today and saw a Stanley no 2 in a display cabinet and made a comment about it they showed it to me and I made a comment that It might be worth something substantial (ish). They basically had no emotional attachment to it and said to investigate what It was worth. It a Stanley US manufacture according to the blade No 2 Complete and undamaged handles and finish Jappaning good condition This has a lateral adjuster. Some minor on blade chip breaker and lever cap rust but no pitting. I am going to give it a tidy up. Just take apart and scrub and a lick on the metal with steel wool and kero or the like.

    Question is Whats it worth?

One sold on Trademe on 14 September for $NZ250. There's one listed on e-pay (UK) ATM - SW era - currently at £141 (10 bids).

Not worth twice as much as a No.1 .

This one on Ebay USA starting at $20.00 and this for a lot more. I am sure I see one from time to time being offered at US$1500.00. It never seems to sell though.

Some collectors will pay good money for a good number 2.
Some craftsmen will be glad to buy a number 2 because their hands are small enough to use it, and it might be worth something to them as a user plane. I have tried one, and it was just too small to use in my large-ish hands. To me it was worth very little. While I wouldn't own one, there are some people who would.

I've never held one, but I wonder if there is little difference between a No 2 and a block plane.

    Not much.
    A Stanley 110 , 120 and 220 are 7 inches long - same as a number 2 - and all, including the number 2, have a 1-5/8 inch wide cutter.
My hands can use a 120 but not a number 2

Yeah, I can just get my hands around a No 3 which I like using. I have a 130 and that "16" you suggested from Hans Bruner and they work for me because I can get my hands around them.

I have several #2's. The #2C I have is valued at reasonable amount being a Type 11. The version depicted appears to be a later model & needs a little work & would be valued in the region of $200 - $300AU (in my opinion )

    Hi,

Hans Brunner has them listed at $350 and $500 for the corrugated sole but it is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.

    Stanley 2 smooth plane

I can see the benefit of a corrugated sole on a long plane (e.g. #7 or #8), but on a tiny little #2 ????

    Just because they could?
