Default The Second Stanley Plane Blade Order

Before we had even finished the first Stanley Plane Blade Order, I had people asking me to do a second batch. Now that everyone has gotten their Stanley Plane Blades from the first order, and it was by all accounts a resounding success. I will start the ball rolling on the second Stanley batch order.

The order will have options for the following blades:

    • 1 3/4" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
    • 2"" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
    • 2 1/4" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
    • 2 3/8" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
    • 2 5/8" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
    • 2 1/8" Rebate Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
    • Block Plane Blade for a #102 Block Plane
    • Block Plane Blade for a #103 Block Plane
    • 2-1/8" Spokeshave Blade

    Cap Irons

Cap Irons are optional for all the Stanley/Record Bench Plane Blades. The problem with the short Cap irons has been resolved. The cap irons will come in longer lengths relative to there widths.

The critical dimension moves from 92 mm @ 1 3/4", then 95 mm @ 2", then 98 mm for a 2 3/8", then 104 mm for a 2 5/8" blade. The cap irons increases by about 3 mm every time the blade jumps up one size.
    Steel

The Steel will be 3 mm thick M2 steel, and the blades should have a nominal thickness after grinding of about 2.8 mm.

    Cost

The price for any of the blades minus a bevel is $40, and the price for a blade with a bevel is $45. As a few people have discovered grinding bevels on M2 is not an easy task, and for the $5 it cost's to get t done for you, is well worth it.

The cost of the Cap iron is $15 per cap iron, and this will come beveled and tapped for a 1/4" 28 TPI UNF thread and a matching cap screw.

    3rd Party Manufactures

The 3rd party manufactures will be the same as we used for the first Stanley Bench Plane Order. Dj is happy to do the running around for us. He has however declined to grind the bevels again. Which is completely understandable.

    ETA

Having worked out all the bugs in the process, and the technical challenges faced in the first batch order, this should be a much smoother and shorter thread.

Oops sorry, I wasn't in on the earlier buys and my lingo is not much chop.
Yes for the cap irons and I see that they were ~$14 before? (reading old thread, whole 90+ pages of it!)

    YAY!!

    Same again please Helmut:

2 x 2" with chip breaker and screw, no bevel
2 x 2 3/8" with chip breaker and screw, no bevel

    Many thanks fella!

Also, would you mind posting your diagrams? I'd like to compare them to my other planes and see if I might also go for a block plane iron.

    Please put me down for:

    2 x 2-3/8" cap irons
    3 x 2" cap irons

Is there any demand for 1-3/4" spokeshave blades (Stanley 63 and 64 type)? I'd be interested in a couple if they become available.

    Hey TS

If you want to, could you make some 2" blades for the new Stanley SW #62 LAJ?

I have a diagram of the layout with dimensions and Vann has offered to digitise it.

The I will be able to follow up Derek Cohen's suggestion and make a steeper bevel for dealing with gnarly grained wood.
    Cheers

    G'day Helmut,

Will we have a choice on the Block Plane blades "style"? By "style" I meant, are you considering the 8 slot and 3 slot blades or just 1 style.

Here are the images of Hock block plane blades,

    Cheers

2.8mm - good idea. Better than grinding 3.5mm down to 3mm.

Good. I'll have several months to get funds to you (seeing as getting money across the ditch carries such a premium). No bevels for me (at this stage).

Has woodward agreed to do the CAD work for the 2 1/8" rebate plane irons, or would you like assistance with that?

    Cheers, Vann.

Ps thanks again to TS and DJ for all the work you guys put into the last order.

I haven't been asked this time around, but as I still have the original files, it wouldn't be difficult to make any modifications. Maybe TS has other plans.

Hi Vann.. fwiw when I need to send money to NZ I go to my bank, buy some NZ cash and stick it in a registered envelope. Buying the cash costs me a couple of dollars (depends on your bank I guess) and the registered envelope is around $10 (other way may be more/less) I have done it a fair bit and have not had any problems with sending a few hundred dollars at a time.
It sure beats the $40 fee that the banks charge to direct deposit into an international account.
    Best regards, Luban

    Hello,

May I ask what shape the cap iron is? The older, original stanley style, or is it the newer Lie Nielsen / Hock version?

    Many thanks,

    Liam

You'll find plenty of photos in this thread.
