(Stanley?) plane dating.
Anyone an expert on ‘plane dating’.
What I have is:
- A body branded at the back MADE IN ENGLAND behind the handle at the back.
- No 5 behind the knob at the front. No numbers or any other markings on the body.
- STANLEY marked on the lever cap (kidney shaped hole).
- Brass depth adjusting nut.
- Handles appear to be 'dark' stained (not sure if the timber is beech) with steel screws.
One of my main question is did Stanley/Bailey issue ‘unbranded’ bodies? Have I got a real frankenplane here!? This is really just for interest sake as the plane works well. I’ve read a few online spiels but haven’t really got anywhere - lots on the USA types as has been said before.

I could be wrong but I don't remember them doing unbranded bodies, all the ones I've seen have Stanley or Bailey somewhere on them.

Black, but I suspect it's just been enameled at some point as opposed to the real deal. A few pics attached.

As far as I know any Stanley plane with a 'kidney' shaped cap-iron shouldn't be matched with a non-Ogee shaped frog (as pictured above). And it should have a 'Bailey' as previously mentioned.

Definately not a Stanley; except for the lever cap! Might be a Footprint?

Nice detective work, tiff. I reckon you're on the money.

I've just donated my old Footprint 5 to a work colleague who's just starting down the slippery slope of woodworking; unfortunately I can't remember what the frog face actually looked like , and it might be a few weeks before I get to see it again to check. If I could see a side on picture of the tote it would help; as would a close up of the brass adjustment wheel.

I think you are correct. Looks like the body and frog are indeed a Footprint just based on online pics, with the lever cap and blade replaced with a Stanley somewhere along the line. Thanks! Frankenplane is confirmed I'll grab some of pics out of interest, that you mention. The only thing I couldn't see online was look-a-like knobs and totes... perhaps they were replacements too.

Frankenplane definately!
Have had a rethink about the base being a Footprint though; the Google Image searches threw up pictures of ogee-edged frogs just like Stanley type 15's onwards; your frog has the indentations but NOT the ogee shoulders...
The Footprint totes are really thick and are made of beech stained red; also the depth adjuster knob is a solid lump of brass.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Hmm... Yeah the knob and tote doesn't match the description. I'm not sure the adjusting knob does either... Maybe parts pulled from everywhere when it was 'restored'.
