    Default Stanley Plane question

I was looking at a plane as I don't have one and might need one someday...

    So.

I found a Stanley Bailey #4 place for $170 in a box, or a Stanley Bailey #4 plane in a plastic wrap for $80.
The more expensive one has a brass adjuster and a different colour handle.

What else would the difference be ?

I ended up purchasing the more expensive one, but shop person couldn't tell me, as expected.

Hi Matt. Modern Stanley planes aren't very good quality - whether you pay $80 or $170. I don't know what the difference between to two would be - possibly one is old stock (made in England) and the other newer stock (made in China/India). Stanley let quality control slip badly over the years, with the serious decline starting after WW2. It's still possible (I suppose) to pick up a good one, but the chances get less the more modern the plane.

To be frank - you'd have been better to pick up an old, second-hand one for $20 or $30. Less gloss, but more quality. Try it out.

If you can't get it to work without chattering, consider taking it back for a refund. Alternatively you could try fettling it (like you would have to for a second-hand one). There plenty of advice to be found on this forum.

    Cheers, Vann.

    Thanks Vann

I will return it and get something better .

I have seen a lot of vintage planes at second hand stores around so will look for something there or even second hand on the forums

If you let people know your suburb, there's a good chance someone might put up their hand to show you some well-tuned tools.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Paul

I am located in Dural and new to wood working. Even the plane has adjustments that I have no idea what they do.
