Thread: What Stanley plane type to collect?

Like Major P, some people collect all Stanley planes of the same type and build up a set of that type. His is superb.
I have never yet had the urge to do this, but I do have a working set of Stanley planes that I have put together over many years. I have handled a number two and owned one briefly, but it is simply too small for my hands to use, so I sold it. So my Stanleys start at number 3, and go through to number 8. Some of them get hardly any use, but I have used them all from time to time.
Most used are 3, 4-1/2, 5-1/2 and 6 - the 6 most of all.
Least used 4 and 8
Others are in between.
When I arranged these and tried to Type them, I found that there were a few that had mixed-Type parentage. The number 5-1/2, for example, should not have the low knob.
Looking closely I found that they all had one thing in common after all being Stanley, and that was that I had replaced the blades in all of them.
You can see some Hocks, LN's, E A Berg, Sargent and Titan - quite a menagerie - and definitely not from the Marquis of Queensbury's Collectors' Rules.
What the hey - I like them, and I use them - and they give me pleasure.

I'd like to chime in and just say it's all about collecting tools that we use and admire.
Most what i know about these old tools i'v learnt from this forum by following the discussion's ,i'v steady down on collecting after i realised that i'd proberly been collecting bitsa's and are more choosie but i still love my collection even if some are door stops.

When I visited Carbatec in Auckland two years ago, they had some old stock Cliftons (i.e. they weren't restocking as supplies ran out). I don't know if any Carbatec branches in Oz have similar remainder stock.

I have two Cliffies: a No.3 and a No.4.5. I bought one from Workshop Heaven and the other from Classic Hand Tools, both in the UK. I found both good to deal with. Both came up with innovative ways of reducing shipping costs (I wanted the cheapest and one came surface shipping). Remember too, that you don't pay VAT on items shipped out of Europe.
