    Default Stanley USA ID

    Hey guys.
I'm looking for some advice on 2 Planes I'm planning on listing for sale.
They're both USA made, one is a 6 and the other is a 3.
From memory, when I bought them, I was told they were type 12's maybe??
Can anyone confirm from the pics? Also really not sure what kind of Value they have. Theyre both very well tuned and in great working condition.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks

You can work out what type it is here The Stanley Bench Plane Page

The kidney shaped hole in the lever cap means it's Type 16 or later.

The 2006 Stanley Little Big Book suggests US$25 average price and US$50 median price for the No.3 and US$20 avg. and US$40 med. for the No.6

Given that the book is 12 years old and is a US printing, those prices might not reflect what you'd get here where the US Made planes are less common, but it's somewhere to start.

I agree that you should use that site Elan posted to ID the plane. Nonetheless, I can look at them and tell that they are of a later type, given that the hole in the lever cap is kidney shaped instead of keyhole shaped. That doesn't really change their usability much, but it reduces their value to a collector. Their condition was probably already taking them out of the ballpark though.

Also, you're facing another issue with the fact that both the 3 and the 6 are kind of "off" sizes. A 3 is small by most user's standards. Most people use a 4. The 6 is a weird intermediate size that's not long enough to be called a proper jointer/trying plane, and too long for daily, workhorse, live-on-the-workbench use. I honestly don't know of anyone who uses one regularly (although I am certain there are literally thousands who do).

So I'd guess that, with my experience buying US made planes in Aus, that Elan's numbers are fairly correct in AUD. $20-50 each. You may try Gumtree. There are plenty of people who buy planes who look on there (I know... I was one for like four years).

    Anyway, good luck.

    Cheers,
    Luke
