Starrett combo square assembly
Hi,
I've been trying to put back together my new (Lie-Nielsen order arrived today) 300mm starrett combo square. I understand that the rule has the rebate and the thumb screw can be pushed up to allow the "internal catch"? to slide into that rebate on the rule. I can't however get the catch to reach into that rebate? Make sense
I'm now thinking of selling my Colen Clenton 8" ebony square so lookout in the market place. I got about 4 quality squares now so I think I might have to.
Any tips from owners would be great.
Andy

Hi Andy,
I have a few various makes of combination square and one of them has the same problem if I take the blade out. Not sure if it has the same mechanism as the Lie Nielsen but for what it is worth here is my experience.
The The knurled knob that tightens the pin, that has a 'T' shaped head to fit the rule slot also has a spring above it. So when the rule is out it can be pushed down by the spring so that it no longer lines up with the centre of the rule. On mine, the pin can also turn a little, again making it hard to fit the rule.
All I doo is wind the knob out a fair bit so I can move the pin up and down and fiddle it, (move up and down and turn a bit) until the slot lines up witht eh pin head. Your LN may have tighter tolerances than my cheapie so it might like to line up exactly.
You could take the pin out all together and fettle the leading edge of the 'T' head in case it has burs on it, just a tiny bit of filing or sandpaper, a very tiny bit, just so it fits and slides smoothly.
Anyway, hope this is of some use to you.
P.S. If you are selling your Colen Clenton square then could I be so rude as to put my hnad up for first offer.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply. I'll have another try on the weekend.
As for the Colen Clenton square I'll get back to you. It'll be hard to let go but I'll see what happens.
