Mac. from the on line calculator. 0.75 mm equals .02953 inches or 29.53 thousand of an inch.

Which backs up what the blue scraper and my 1955 back saw is.

with a bit of polishing and linishing it would bring the thickness down nearer to what you are looking for.
Yep, they seem to be pretty accurate! I've measured mine at 0.75mm, which is close enough to 30 thou in pounds shillings & pence (20 thou is 0.5mm). You can look on .75mm as being half as thick again as the 1095 steel Ray advocates, or you could say it's only 10 thousandths of an inch thicker. It's more a case of what kind of saw you want to end up with. I would find the 30 thou steel a bit clumsy in a smaller saw, but it seems about right for the 300mm x 90mm tenon saw I'm currently making. I won't know for sure until it's finished & has a few test drives.

The two sheets of 20 thou 1095 I ordered from the US are on their way. I checked my credit card account a couple of nights ago, and it's going to work out at about $19.50 Au. per blade landed in Brisbane. Postage was the killer - $56US!!. Ther must be a more economical way to get the sheets shipped here, which would bring the cost down significantly.

The scrapers from Bunnies are still a very useful source of cheap scrapers and other applications - wish I'd known about them years ago.

    Cheers,

I got a reply back earlier today from Mike Wenzloff, and he is going to find out what the
postage will be for 100 ft of 3" wide 20 thou 1095 bright polished coil will be. (100 ft works out to about 20 lbs)

100ft roughly matches up with the brass order.

So sometime tomorrow I will have a pretty good idea what the costs will be.

    Regards
    Ray

I see you guys are onto the Axis blue steel floor scrapers. Good stuff!

I'm dead jealous of all this tool making or proposed tool making that's happening that I'm not a party to!

It's been a bit hot here for too much shed action, plus I'm up to my armpits in a completely different dimension of saws. Currently I'm adapting these new acquisitions to the old related equipment but I will hopefully get back to tool making soon!

Looking forward to see some products.

Ray, a USPS fixed rate box costs US$41.95 and has these dimensions:
    11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8" (rectangle-shaped)
    11" x 8.5" x 5.5" (square-shaped)

with a max of 20lbs. So if the steel could fit in one of those then the costs look pretty good.

    The large priority box is 12" x 12" x 5-1/2", still 20lband US$53.95

    otherwise looks expsnsive, ie US$108.75
. Or if really bulky then ?

    cheers
    Peter
thanks for doing a good job. My excuses for not making saws are looking weaker and weaker.

Ian, Bunnings no longer carry this line (I collected the last stocks from my local a few years ago), however I found them online at another outlet, if you are still interested...
Axis 356mm Floor Scraper Blade Replacement. Still no idea who makes them.

    Axis?
Google has nothing to say about who Axis is, though...

Yes, Peter, it was a useful source of saw-grade steel. Every now and then I walk through the "floor" section in Bunnings just to see if they have got more in, but so far, no luck, so I guess they have gone out of them for good. With the constant building going on throughout the country, there must be a small but regular market for these things, & surely someone is filling it in the absence of the big players.
I tried to find out what the blades cost on the site you directed us to, but you have to register and faff about before they'll tell you what the prices are, so I lost interest (it's annoying how some sites work that way!). In any case, I'm vacating the saw-making business, and don't want to acquire any more material.....

    Ian,

I'm surprised and saddened you're quitting the saw work. I've found our conversations here very helpful.

    Cheers,
    Rob

Gavin, a new kitchen & two bathrooms (for us), and a backlog of items for the children and grandchildren (desks, chairs, etc. etc.). I'm not quitting the shed just yet.

Rob, I won't say never ever to making another saw, but I can definitely say I'm going to be much more of a saw user for the next little while. I'll still be around to chuck in my 2c-worth when it comes to saw discussions. And I'm sure you'd agree that using a good saw is almost as pleasurable as making one...

Bunnies must've had a quarrel with the original suppliers of the big floor scrapers that got me into all this trouble in the first place. Notice these replacement blades are 300mm whereas the 'originals' were 350mm? They are also thicker at 1.04mm (40 thou). The 'originals' were 30 thou thick, which is a more appropriate gauge for saws of this size, imo. The 350mm blades were darn good metal, too, the couple of saws I still have that were made from them hold an edge as well as any saw from the saw steel we imported. They do seem to exist elsewhere, but for at least double the price (in one case 3x!) they were when Bunnies stocked them. Oh well, all good things come to an end, they say.....

    Cheers,
    IW

Nice to see this thread resurrected. Somehow I disappeared into the ether for a while and never partcipate in the purchase and making. Now I am back.
Did anyone finish their saw and post photos?
