How do you store your combination plane?
Further to my recent post about the filletster blade.
My recently aquired stanley 45 needs a place to rest. (also needs a pair of long rods if anybody happens to have a pair to sell)
Looking for any ideas on how to store it.
Just in a box with the loose bits sitting in the bottom?
just sitting on a shelf or drawer?
something more specific?

Store the plane in a box and the irons in a smaller box or find a sleeve of some sort that will hold them.
You could also get a bunch of tiny magnets and make a little storage board to put them on. Like the kind of rare earth small magnets that are 5 or 10 for a dollar and about the size of a pencil eraser.

Making a box for it with slide-out racks or boxes for the blades & other parts would be the best solution, I reckon. These planes & their bits & pieces seem to part ways so easily! If everything is in a box, even the least tool-aware person can see they belong to each other.
You can keep it very utilitarian or go wild and make it as fancy as you like. I take a middle road, with an emphasis on being a solid container, but tart it up a little bit so it looks like it might contain something of value. The hope is that when my heirs are cleaning out my shed they might pause & check what's inside rather than just tossing it in the skip ....

'Course with something like the router, it's unlikely anyone will recognise it as a useful tool so it may still go in the skip, but at least I tried....

Build a box that allows the plane to be stored in an assembled state. I have a couple of Record 405’s and a Lewin I can take pictures of to give you some idea if you wish?

Hi F. I have a #45 (pre 1905, I think, has the flowers cast into the main body) and the original box (minus the sliding lid). Without completely disassembling it, the plane won't fit. Not really going to help you but always struck me as an odd choice by Stanley.

A matter of minimising the space required for storage & shipping, MA?
Having boxes big enough to store things in a convenient state of assembly is nice, but can blow the space budget! The Studley chest is a wonder of compactness, but perhaps not so convenient if you want to access all of the tools quickly. Most of us have to find a compromise between maximum convenience & minimum volume according to what space our workshops allow.
Keeping things together compactly & accessibly has been an ongoing struggle for me. I recently acquired a Record 078, and found it won't fit in the box I made for a Stanley 78 & its parts due to the longer fence & spare fence rods. The container for the Stanley only just fitted in a spare corner under the ramp that supports my #7, & I'm currently studying Tardis technology to get the Record to fit in the same space...
Cheers,IW

The Veritas Combination plane has many blades ... too many to store individually. I keep mine in roles, in a box with the plane ...

Is not as nice as the work by Ian and Derek, but here's my case for my plow plane kit.
The diagonally opening lid was an experiment to provide easy access to the plane, plus storage in the lid for the fence.
The blade holder is from lee valley when I was stocking up on a few blades.
Regards,
Adam

thanks for the ideas, people.
I kind of like the boxes with deep lids so the plane is not so deep when you open up.
I'll have to have a crack at somekind of box for it then.____________________________

This is a plough plane and box I built, and not a combination plane, per se. Adam's excellent box reminded me of this build. It was published in FWW magazine about 10 years ago ..

Hi D. Those are some lovely plough irons. Are they new or really nicely refurbished?

MA, they were NOS. I won them at a David Stanley auction in 2012. Full, unused set. I do not know who made them - it was common practice for the irons to be made by one or two blade makers for all the big names, and then stamped by the plane maker.

The Sargent 1080 fits nicely into the original wooden case with the blades all in the small canvas roll. Both the case and the roll need a bit of refurb. I'll get there.

I made the leather case for the blades of the Stanley 46 but I have yet to make a box to keep it all safe. I've only had it for about 20 yrs. You don't want to rush these things.

There are some nice storage boxes there! No photo, but mine are a lot more utilitarian, made from 9 mm construction ply. I have three planes in boxes - plough, rebate and router. The boxes are all the same size and made when I got the tool. I used the box as an opportunity to learn to use the tool.
I think the extra space they take up is justified by the risk of losing parts.
Mine are also stored ready to use.
