I was learning frame carpentry in the U.S by starting at the bottom about 1980 . carpenters all carried combo squares. then the speed square appeared and almost overnight the combo square was left in the toolbox,everyone bought one, $5 i remember. the S.Q. is ideal for fast marking a line across a board , measuring and repoducing any angle and fits into your nail bag. I have used them ever since and i got a bunch at whoever preceded bunnings 25 years ago for a song , close out sale , aluminium gave them all away for except for a keeper.you can buy them in a non metal at hardwhares but harder to read. As far as i can tell most of our blokes cling to the combo square and i still work with old timers who have never seen one . thats my contribution ,Rossco
