I wonder if it wasn't 3 Plain teeth with a gullet between them. There are all sorts of tooth patterns.
With the Great American I would expect to see an equilateral triangle with two "half-sized" triangles on each side.
I thought yours looked like a series of triangles all the same shape (roughly).

At some stage, if you have a micrometer or vernier ... what is the thickness of the plate at the teeth and at the back please.

    Hi,
I have been back on the 2 saws. Rather than indulge myself with the big one I figured I should finish of the tenon saw for crowie. I sharpened it and gave it a smidgen if set. Did a couple of test cuts and in spite of the battering it has had in years past and with the spine not quite strait it cuts reasonably well. Not pretty but a worker. I think I'll call that one done.
On the big one I have the front handle made and thinking I will drill holes to define the gullet depth then cut down to them. The plate is just a bit less than 2mm. My digital calipers have gone haywire so I could not measure it all that fine. There is no taper in the plate as far as I can tell.

crowie I wil send you a pm re the saw.

    Regards
    john

    Default Thank you John....

    Again THANK YOU John...
Bob's old saw looks great and as you suggested it is properly over 100yrs old.
I did a little internet searching after you pointed out the makers mark on it.
The etching on the saw is Abraham Ashton & Sons Ltd, Sheffield....
According to British Saw Works and the photo I've inserted they were around 1986 - 1911....
I didn't find any 12" saws neither a saw with a tapered blade...
Thought others might be interested in this piece of history John unearthed from a rusty old handsaw...
    Cheers, Crowie

Thank you John for the encouragement to do a little extra investigation and work.
I'll add that to my list as if it's half as interesting as this one, it'll be well worthwhile.
    Cheers, crowie

    John amazing resto well done.

I am ashamed as over the last few days I have had to move the small collection of saws some my dad's a few mine and some my FiL's NOT all need TLC but maybe its time they became usable again at least. A couple need new handles others screws missing etc.
