Ouch - that's a bit hard to justify! Maybe I just need to cobble something together...

I just tapped a lathe chuck for 1 3/8 threads. We used a metal lathe and held the part in the chuck and then put the cone center(dead) into the countersink at the end of the tap. took the biggest wrench I had and Muscled it through. Kept tightening the dead center as we tapped the hole to keep things on center.. took everything I had.

Secondhand shops? Look for the big wrenches used in the pipe tapping kits.

Or ask at your local Mens Shed?

Yes, a bit rich for a couple of pieces of steel and some threads. I have a bunch I have collected over the years from various sources.

I have used a largish spanner at a pinch. The hardest part is getting it started nice and true. Once is is started it goes quite easily and will stay true.

Hi Danny,
One way you may consider is to buy a Bolt of the same size, & cut some of it away, almost the same as a bought Tap.
Not sure what you could do for the other end, depending which way you want it. I know of others that have done it.

Most tap wrenches are set up to cover a range of sizes. You don't really need that. You might like to consider making something out of flat bar the depth of the square on the end of your 30mm tap. Drill a hole and then file out the square shape.

It may wear as it won't be high carbon steel, but make them up to suit.

As I have not ever done this, I went and grabbed the M30 tap I bought many years ago for a similar purpose as you, but have never used. I has a 20mm square shank and is 25mm long. Much of what I have suggested would depend on you being set up to drill a 19 -20mm hole in steel (or getting somebody to do this for you).

I would suggest FB 40mm - 50mm wide and 20mm - 25mm thick. Or whatever you have to hand. Possibly weld some round bar on the end for handles.

I'm not set up for drilling a 20mm hole in steel. Might have to try keeping an eye on ebay and gumtree, hopefully sooner or later one comes up a little cheaper than the one Yanis found. The blackwoods one is $275!
