    At the moment, you'd have to think that the red part of the compass could be just painted on - permanently pointing South.

    We used to get into trouble at school for calling them a compass. It had to be a pair of compasses.

    I don't have anything useful to add to this very interesting discussion, but has anybody actually watched the video for the compass? I cacked myself when the demonstrator tried more to commit seppuku with a traditional compass than putting it in their apron pocket.

    I don't know how I ever survived my school years without death or serious injury by compass......lethal things, should be banned. Following recent legal action in the US, I've heard that SawStop are working on flesh-sensing technology for the compass that automatically retracts the point to prevent injury. The prototype is too heavy to lift, but Woodpeckers use of red-anodised aluminum (sic) may help in this regard.

    Hi guys

    Abit of track of the pricing structure of businesses , but if you want a compass for the shop why not this , for $45 it worked for me and I got extras

    I come from an era of dip-in pens and those pens in the hands of a feral teacher were nearly as bad as a pair of compasses. At least the compasses didn't tattoo you with the dried ink.

    The compasses at my time 59-65 had bow pens and india ink (pencil leads were for practice)

    I went to a very rough school...they were called weapons.
