Default Tell him hes dreaming!!!"really good Titans

"Had a run to the markets this morning", on the quest to add to my Titan collection. Pickings were very thin with only 3 found (none bought)...Whilst picking through a box the guy said äre you after a chisel?".....told him what i was looking for...he then produced a rag rolled up ...opened it up....3 Titan sockets..no handles.......ok so i could turn up some on the lathe...the chisels had been polished right up and looked very pretty..i think he had used a belt sander to do this by all the scratches on the blade, the sockets...well one was ok the other two looked like they had been used with a sledge hammer to split rocks with...but i suppose i could grind them round im thinking....clean the blades with some wet and dry......."how much you want?"'.......öh these are top quality, made in australia you know'".......$100 for all 3........yeah right....

If you made a handle for a bare Titan, what shape would you go with?
Something to suit you, or reproduce an original?

I once asked Patrick Leach - a couple years ago - if he knew anything about Titans ... and he said he hadn't heard of them.
    Huh! Thinks he knows tools.

… ellipses come in threes, indicate a gap, a tacit understanding or an implication to be drawn in the logical flow of the sentence. If you overuse them you can break them There are always gaps in my logical flow when it comes to Titan chisels.

    He's most definitely dreaming!

I thought paying $75 for 4 in good condition was being a bit wild, but two of them, a 1 1/4" & a 1 1/2" looked to be in excellent condition, & almost full-length. The other two were smaller sizes I've been searching for, for a long time, so I thought I had better spring for them while I could. Anyways, pics are a bit deceptive, the larger two were very rough on the back - took me all afternoon to clean them up, and one was so badly duffed, I ended up grinding about 2mm off the end, or I would have been lapping 'til hell froze over. (I hope there is a special place in hell reserved for people who apply the backs of chisels to grinders! ).

I don't like the original Titan handles at all - an exceedingly dull shape, and the wood they used (Spotted Gum??) does not finish to the sort of surface I like. The nice part about sockets is that handles are so easy to fit, so I encourage you to fool about until you find a design you like. For the moment, anyway, the handle design I like on this sort of chisel is the one I used on my Titans - see here.

I have a few original Titan handles in fairly good condition, so if anyone out there wants 'em, & is prepared to pay postage (or better still, collect them) they are welcome to them......

    Cheers,

I work at a High School where the bulk of the chisels are Titans. Don't know much about them but was told the factory that made them was in Newcastle NSW.
