    Hi All,

Just a quick question, I'm part way through milling the primary bevels and am about to do the skews.
Would those who have asked for skew plane blades, let me know if they want left or right skews.

There are only 4 skewed plane blades in the total batch, so I'm thinking it's most likely going to be two left handed and two right handed, but as it's not an (easily) reversible process. I'd like to get it right.

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi Ray

I'd prefer my skew blade to be right-handed please (I think that's the correct convention - leading point of the blade on the right hand side in bevel down configuration).

    Many thanks

    Hi SiJ,

Yes, I think that's the convention, the bevel up skews on the LV website and the LN seem to be following the same notation,
Right Hand Skew, the leading point is on the right.
Left Hand Skew, the leading point is on the left.

But you raise another question, , and that is who wants bevel up or bevel down?

I've got yours sorted, I'll make yours as right-handed bevel down.

    Anyone else?

    Regards
    Ray

PS.. I'm pretty sure that RH bevel down is same geometry as LH bevel up..

Thats what I was hoping! First aim would be to do a RH BD rebate style plane, then at some stage attempt a LH bevel up LA plane for a shooting board using the same blade. Gawd knows how long it'll take me to get there though!!!

Some time has passed since there was any action in this thread. I've been away from the forum for a good six months, have I missed something? Apologies if I am missing something. :S

    Yes, don't lean on Ray...

Still on track for next month, depending....

I've still got to re-drill the hang holes, that the waterjet cutter stuffed up... but that's about all that's remaining to be done..

The extra blade for the other order, can go to heat treatment with this lot.

Also I'd like to do a full audit to make sure that we aren't missing anything.

    Regards
    Ray

Cool, thanks for the update. I didn't realise this was linked to another thread, that's what I was missing.

RayG has finished the preliminary grinding. Last week the items were delivered to Surface Technology for heat treatment. Only to be told that they no longer offer the salt furnace heat treating service. I am now making calls for another company to take over the heat treatment. I will have something early next week. Heat treatment is fast about three week turn around. Then its back to RayG for clean up and postage.

I spoke to Gary from Hills Heat Treatment this morning. They are happy to take over the job. They charge $16 instead of $12 that Surface Technology charges. Gary says it will take them about a week to heat treat all the items.

At this point we have a cost overrun on the steel and heat treatment. I will chase up a dozen blokes who have not paid yet. As we will be needing the money for the heat treatment asap.

This means that RayG will deliver the pieces to Hills Heat Treatment sometimes soon, and we can get the ball rolling.

    EDIT

PM's have been sent out to those blokes who still over money. If you still need to pay can you do so asap, as we will need to pay the heat treatment asap.

    SPARE ITEMS

We have a whole set of pairing chisels and the following plane blades up for grabs from blokes who have dropped of the face of the earth. We will need to find homes if we aim to pay for all expenses related to this batch order. If you are interested in them PM me.

TS - is there a list of the spare blades and details of the paring chisels coming?
    Stay sharp and stay safe!
