Question Which Timber - Plane Tote and Knob

Looking to replace both my Veritas LAJ and my Stanley 5 1/2 plane totes and knobs.

Can I have some feedback as to what timbers to consider for the replacement

Cherry and Walnut come to mind, but I am sure there are better options and more local to Australia.

Pictures would be a nice touch of the finished projects

Jason - there are many woods that are suitable, given the wood is compressed by the retaining screws, strength is a minor issue and any wood with a density >0.6-0.65 should be ok, so it's mostly a matter of colour and how fine a surface finish you want. Tight-grained slightly oily woods like (Sth American) Rosewoods end up with a beautiful silky feel, which is probably why it was so popular. Some of our woods I've tried include She-oak, Bull-oak, Qld Walnut,Western Myall, & River Red gum. Haven't tried Mulga for totes, because I haven't been able to get large enough pieces, but I reckon it would be excellent. There's probably at least 100 more that would work!

She-oak is pretty good stuff & among my favourites for handle wood. I posted my effort at re-handling my own Veritas BU a few years ago.

    Cheers,
    IW

The She-oak came up well, looks sensational. I appreciate the list of timbers. Looks like a trip down to my local timber supplier.

I hope they have something more than Radiata and Meranti, who do you go to in the Menai area

    Hi Clinto

While it is not "Local" to the Sutherland area, most of my timber pruchases are from Anagote Timbers @ Marrickville.Just down the M5 carpark and turn onto Princes Highway and turn left (approx 20-30minutes).

    Jason

I have used Australian Rosewood for totes and handles. It is easy to work and as IanW said it feels good. It has tight grain, beautiful colour and looks great when finished with shellac, wipe on poly, etc.

From memory Anagote do not stock Australian Rosewood but you will be able to get some from Greg Ward in Cremorne. Have a look for "Cremorne Carport sale" under Timber Sales over in the Market Forum and you will find his mobile number (or send him a PM - his Forum name is GregWard).
