    Default Are Veritas planes any good?

    I'm thinking about buying a new 4 1/2 plane rather than looking for a decent Stanley Bedrock version. There is about $100 between the Lie-Nielsen and the Veritas versions of the 4 1/2.

    Does anybody have experience with the Veritas planes? I'd like the Lie-Nielsen but wonder if it's worth the extra money.

    If you are interested in a Bevel Down plane, comparing the LN and LV the major difference is the heft of the LN at 5½ lbs versus the LV at 5 lb. LN fit and finish is a smidge higher then the LV. The tote is a major factor as well, its a personal prefence thing. Also the LV has a norris still adjuster were the LN has the Bailey adjuster. The Bailey adjuster can be adjusted with the tips of your finger as you are pushing the plane for micro adjustment. The blade on the LV is 0.125" and the LN its 0.40. Thicker blade equals less chatter. LN also has an Improved chipbreaker at .015" the LV has an older style Stanley chipbreaker. The LN also has the option of getting a High Angle Frog setting the blade to York Pitch. If hardwood are your thing.

    Personally I would pass over the 4 1/2 for a No. 5 1/5 jack plane. The weight and extra lenght comes in handy.

    Both companies make superb kit. The biggest difference is that LN tend to be more a direct Stanley replica, but with a fantastic quality of engineering and finish that Stanley & co couldn't even dream about, whereas LV tend to be a bit more avant garde in their approach.

    Nevertheless, the planes from both work superbly well. I have quite a few from each so speak from some small experience.

    All my planes with the exception of the No.4 are LV. I have no problem in recommending them. For me, they feel just right.

    I like LV bevel up planes. I havent used the LN versions. For bench planes, I think LN just gets top for finish. Both are highly recommended by alot of people.

    I don't have enough plane experience to give my opinion, but would say the forum handplane guru states LV make the best bevel up plane LN make the best bevel down plane - don't ask me to find that quote but it's here somewhere.

    Either plane you will do well, for me I have LV not LN (yet).
