Default Veritas Skew Rabbet Plane fence moves

I love this tool it really is fantastic but you need to make some changes for it to work flawlessly. At first I couldn't figure out why in the world did the fence move, well for those that hold the knob you probably won't face this issue and you most probably won't get a square cut it only felt natural to push the fence in and thumb hold it down from the top on the inside of the tool and then make your cut but, there's a problem with this method. Your thumb is in an unatural position and your pushing the fence out or actually the rods are slipping which results in the plane pushing in and making a wider cut. Obviously the fence can't push out since your pushing in but the plane itself is being pushed into the timber thus resulting in a wider cut.

So I started googling and lo and behold I come across Christopher Schwarz having the same problem. The cure is simple. Sand paper the rods oh no but my nice shiny rods will be ruined but that's the only solution and take off the knob as well and your thumb will thank you for it plus you will have alot more control.

I hope this has helped someone out there. What would we do without our smilies

    Happy New Year everyone!

One final note it is imperative when setting the fence to measure from the protruding blade, so set the square to the desired width and place the square against the side of the blade and set the fence accordingly. You will have to take off the depth gauge to do this properly. Then set your depth. I would recommend besides having a super sharp blade to practise cut for a while so you get used to holding the tool correctly in order to get that 90#° cut.

It is equally important to set the blade parallel to the sole and when you sharpen the blade get yourself one those skew registration jigs to get the correct angle of 22° it's important you keep that angle, also that jig is made to fit in MKII honing guide. Lastly set the blade protruding from the side closest to the fence no more than 1/32" which is equal to paper width.

I wonder why Veritas didn't put a fence handle on the Skew Rabbet plane like that on the Small Plow Plane.

Even when Lee Valley demo the Skew Rabbet plane on video, they don't use the front knob.

I guess you could add a wooden handle.
Anyone with both planes know if the the fence on the Small Plow fits the Skew Rabbet?
