    Default What Vices are these?

As part of the many tools I have inherited from my late Father, I now have 2 vices that will need new homes.
I have been researching vices to get an idea what they are and what they may be worth, and was hoping someone here can help me with some more info.
One of the vices is marked "Dawn" and is a big heavy metal beast. (metalwork vice?)
The other is a "Joplin" and has wood mounted between the jaws (woodwork vice?)
I will attempt to attach some photos.
Am I correct in my assumptions about the use of these vices?
How are the size of these vices measured?
EG: Is a "6 inch vice" measured across the top of the jaw, or somewhere else?
The Dawn vice appears to have been modified or repaired at some stage as I can see some weld marks on it. Will this effect it's value (if indeed it's worth anything )
They both appear to be in working condition, so hopefully they will be worth something to someone
Appreciate any feedback, thanks for reading!

thanks for the replies fellas, I figured that they would be decent vices as my Dad always bought good stuff and appreciated quality gear.
Any ideas on how to measure them? what they are worth?
I will be listing them for sale soon and would like to give the prospective buyer as much info as possible

Width of jaws and opening thats the only dimensions you want
!st one is an enginers/mechanics/fitters vice.
2nd one is a hobby woodworkers vice
Neither of them have quick release mechanisms.
    1st one probably worth around$50
    2nd one probably around $5-10.
    Hope this helps.

The Joplin is worth more than $5-10 dollars. I have the exact same vice. Paid $30.00 for it and thought that was a bargain.

    Thanks Sapling,
It is hard to imagine that such a serious piece of equipment could be worth $5 but I guess in the end something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
