    Default WA Wood Show 2012

Wow had a very good time there Saturday.

I took some horrible photos with my phone, but I'll take the camera today.

I saw my first ever River Lett saw ... which stopped me in my tracks when I was talking to Geoff and happened to glance down at the display case I was leaning on
Lost track of the conversation totally ...
He already knows I'm an idiot, so he wasn't too fazed.

There was some great tools displayed at the Hand Tool Preservation stand, and great people to talk to. There was the nicest infill plane I've ever seen - a panel plane - user made many many years ago in different woods, but I don't know how good a photo I'll be able to get of it through the perspex.

    Well worth the time!
    Cheers,
    Paul

My photos came out better than I was expecting.

The guys at the Hand Tool Preservation stand + some of the tool displays, including BoringGeoff in a subtle yellow number, his display of braces (including the ones he's wearing), and the User-made infill panel plane I mentioned. You won't be able to make it out, but it has different woods, excellent colour, and the owners name is stamped into an inlaid rectangle of boxwood in front of the bun.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't think to get this section today.
Either the club, or one of the members, has the full tool collection of a woodworker from many years ago, including the workbench as I understand it.

Hopefully Geoff can make some sense out of my waffle and clarify for me. They were an attractive set of tools with that well-handled patina. There was one or two cards explaining the background, but I didn't think to photograph it.

Actually - this must be the tool cabinet, but not very close up. Doh.
... No ... sorry. Not this set.

The Forest products Division had a great video going on a little tv set - want to find out more about that - see if it is available to the public.

They also had a display box with samples of WA timbers. I found out about Gimlet today - which I had never heard of before.

Perth Woodschool ... David Howlett and a chair by one of their students.

    The famous Alex Snodgrass.

    Paul,
take a look at this one...same maker...this one is mine, I know of about 6 of them.
    Bayfield, Nottingham.
The handle on mine is a replacement. The original infill is Mahogany.
I have a smoother and rebate by Bayfield also, seen below.
The rebate is a skew blade, and a beauty. It is practically unused and unmarked, but is identical to others marked by Bayfield. The smoother is marked.
    Regards,
    Peter

    Default WA Wood Show

I went Saturday morning. It was all the usual exhibitors. I thought the wood and tools were expensive (perhaps that is me just getting older). There were some nice pieces of furniture - and it always knocks me out that many of these pieces are made by school kids. If only I was half as talented!

There seemed to be plenty of people buying tools and wood. Unfortunately, the best pieces of wood already has "sold" written upon them.

I have sold some other bits and pieces and it is time to upgrade my second hand jointer and thicknesser so I was after an 8 inch jointer at the show - probably the Carbatec CTJ-350 and their 15 inch Thicknesser, the CTJ-381 - if the deal was okay. The thicknesser was on special but I was told I could order the jointer and pay full list price - $1295 - there were none for immediate delivery - so no show special for me and no sale to Carbatec. I'm reluctant to pay on a promise - even to Carbatec.

I really do think the Perth Wood Show should be earlier in the year. I have just received my council rates and water rates - nearly $3000 of bills just before the show. Perhaps move it to the end of May before the big bills?

I'm interested to hear of the experiences of others.

I went on Saturday morning first time in 5 years as I'm usually away at this time of the year. Arrived an hour before it officially opened and watchrf the chainsaw milling boys showing everyone how not-to-do-it. Once the doors opened I did a stint as a floor watcher/helper on the FWWA display (some pretty impressive stuff there). Then I went and talked to a few people, Boringeoff on the HTPS display, Chris on the Triton display, and Chris Vesper. Bought a few trinkets at Mcjings. It's not worth me looking at machines my shed is full, and the milling yard is full of wood and machines. I don't like large crowds so I couldn't face the big tool areas or watching any demos. I was home by 1 pm. If it's on at the same time gain next year I'll be away but I don't feel at all deprived. I realize some people love it but it's not really my scene - I'd rather be in my shed making a bit of metal or wood dust.

I've been every year for the last 4 years and was dissapointed this year there didn't seem to be as much to see. I was lookimg for belt/disc sanding machines and only saw a couple on display. As for the Beyond Tools part of the expo, well I can walk into the shop basically any day of the year and see all the same stuff and don't need to pay $15 entry to do so.

The parking seemed to be a problem this year too, the main cause of it in my opinion was the fact people didn't seem to care if they blocked access to whole areas off and just parked where they felt like with complete disregard to anyone else. Maybe they need to spend more effort marking out the parking and access ways somehow?

I think I'll probably skip next year.

    I went!
I always take the Friday. Had a great day, caught up with heaps of wood turners. Bought some stuff from McJing. Not in the market for much else.

Noticed it is now smaller with the model clubs and Tool preservation guys now down in the tool/wood area. No Stan Ceglinski this year either. Was looking at a new cordless drill, but the Bosch show price was the standard Toolmart price anyway.

I looked at burls and offcuts and quite expensive to last year. I believe timber prices have gone up as well.

I am a little over the WA show, compared to the Melb show, but I am looking forward to next year.

I agree with you about the prices of tools ( I don't buy timber there so can't comment) , but $15 for entry ticket is getting a bit high and I think that some of the stores had less stock than the last few years.

But I think having the Craft Fair there as well made the whole place too crowded.

And the demonstrations and workshops were pretty much a waste of time due to the competing noise from power tool demos and the PA systems of some of the nearby stall holders .

I went on Saturday which is probably the busiest of the three days so maybe I am being a bit hard, but there were some workshops I was interested in but gave up after the first. Surely it can't be that hard to allocate a "quiet area"?

Default Perth Wood Show August 2012

Here are a few glimpses of the Perth Wood Show, taken over the past weekend.

I managed a couple of shots of the lay out before the crowds arrived. Even so I did not attempt to capture the vastness of the stalls and exhibits. It was impossible for one small camera.

    Scanning in two directions ...

Arriving, you will see David Howlett who runs the Perth Wood School ..

The PWS will be host to David Haig, New Zealand furniture maker of renown shortly. David's signature rocking chair ..

Chris Vesper, toolmaker extraordinaire, stayed over with me this weekend, behaving very badly, very badly indeed. I spent much of the time helping on his stand. He is the fellow here with the cheeky grin ..

    Some of his wares ..

    Terry Gordon was there ..

... with beautiful woodies, especially brass infilled hollow and rounds, snipes bill, and new dado planes. I purchases a 1/2" dado plane and will be reviewing is in due course ...

The Show would not be complete without David Eckert and Phil Dixson of Lie-Nielsen ...

The Hand Tool Preservation Society was there ..

A lecture by Neil Scobie, furnituremaker from Coffs Harbour ..

My good friends, Neil and Pam Erasmus. Neil is one of the foremost furniture designers and maker in Australia, and a regular contributor to the Australian Wood Review magazine. Here he is representing his wood school ..

There were fun activities for kids ..

The pieces on show ranged from the technical ..

    .. to the small ..

    .. to the intricate ..

There were far too many stalls, exhibitors and exhibits to record.

I was asked to provide a selection of my wooden tools for show, and these were exhibited. Of course I cannot resist showing off ..

    Regards from Perth

Should have splashed out on the air-fare. How about one of the man behind the camera?
