Wenzloff saw - the best of things.
Arrived home from work to day to find a parcel from Mike Wenzloff ... a half back saw. This was a birthday present from my wife, Lynndy (birthday earlier this month).
Mike managed to find a beautiful chunk of Tasmanian Blackwood for the tote. Oh, just stunning - the whole deal ... handwork ... wood ... concept ... the best of saws.
Oh lucky me!
Thank you Mike and Lynndy.
Regards from Perth

Congrats Derek. It looks great, and a stunning tote as mentioned.
We will all expect a report on how it works (superbly of course!) shortly....
Yet another tool to put on my wishlist....

Absolutely beautiful saw.
Mike W's work is a piece of art.
What is this type of saw used for?

Nice looking saw.
What tasks would you use this one for? The blade looks to be quite deep at the handle end. Given that it is only supported for a short distance by the spine, what purpose does the spine serve?

Hi Silent
The half-back is for crosscuts at the workbench. It is 18" long and filed 12 ppi. My current go-to crosscut saw is a 22" S&J that is filed 9 ppi. I am expecting that the half-back will provide me with the same depth of cut (that I cannot get from backsaw) but a smoother cut and with improved control. I have not used it yet, but hefting it, it is delightfully light, a vaste difference to my 14" Nurse brassback backsaw.

Hi Derek,
I ordered one of Mikes saws via email at least 3 months ago now, but I have not received a reply. I used the email address on his web and followed up a few times to at least get a response...but nothing. Is that the usual way he does business I wonder ??? I even wanted to pay while the $A was up.
Any suggestions ? or do I just wait until he gets back to me.
PS. I love your reviews, keep up the good work

John
Mike is very busy - he receives a great number of emails every day, which take time to get through. BUT he is absolutely reliable and I would just advise you to be patient. He will get back to you. An order will likely take about 12-18 months to fill. This is not unusual with custom toolmakers, especially the good ones.
The alternative is to place an order for one of his standard saws through Lee Valley.

From another forum it seems that he has a backorder book of about 1000 saws.
It looks like he will be busy for some time yet.
Evidently the saws are worth the wait.
Good luck

If Mike is that busy it may help if he puts an auto-respond on his email advising of expected response times and alternate supply sources (such as LV).
